Datto is seeking a Computer Hardware Engineer to join our growing team. Hardware Engineering at Datto involves designing hardware solutions to enable the best product experience for our customers. This includes everything from researching new computer hardware technologies, defining specifications and partnering with our supply base to bring new products to life. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Define specifications for off-the-shelf computer hardware systems
  • Identify system chassis, hard drives, motherboards, memory and other major computer hardware technologies to implement in a solution
  • Collaborate with test engineers to verify compatibility, performance, reliability and quality on the component and system level
  • Assist with engineering documentation; bill of materials, performance benchmarking, test results
  • Interface with global vendors to understand new technologies and offerings
  • Maintain knowledge of computer industry component trends and how to implement them in systems.


  • BS Computer Engineering or ElectricalEngineering
  • At least 2years of applicable professional hardware design experience
  • Ability to:
    • Engage with computer hardware suppliers and manufacturers
    • Experience designing systems with off-the-shelf hardware components
    • Be passionate for computers and curious for learning more about how they work
    • Use logic and reasoning to clarify goals, examine assumptions, and identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative hardware solutions
    • Create and manage Hardware BOM’s
    • Communicate with our Hardware facility to ensure product production and assembly
  • Knowledge of:
    • Computer hardware components and major manufacturers
    • HDD, SSD, PCIe, MSATA, SAS, NAND, DDR3/DDR4, consumer and server grade CPU/motherboards, Mini-PC’s and Rackmount appliances
    • Linux
  • Understanding of RAID levels and/or understanding of data redundancy
  • Experience with PHP, Python, C/C++, or bash a plus
