Position Overview:

This position will be responsible for Import/Export (Trade) Compliance and Hazardous Materials Shipping Compliance within the Americas Region for Brady Corporation. The individual will work with a team of Trade Compliance specialists in various plants to reduce risk for the company and help with cross-border activities. The chosen candidate will collaborate and communicate with other departments on a regular basis to facilitate the movement of products to and from the US, Mexico, and other countries, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. This position will supervise 2-5 direct reports, some of which may be located elsewhere. This is a hands on managerial position. Some (up to 10%) travel may be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that Brady's trade transactions, shipping, and receiving comply with all applicable government regulations and internal policies and procedures
  • Determine and assign trade information such as Classifications, Commodity Codes, and Country-of-Origin designations, based on the latest rules and regulations
  • Ensure that trade data assignments are up-to-date in ERP (SAP and Oracle, as applicable) and associated systems for all products
  • Act as point-of-contact for Brady's brokers, review all imports received by our brokers, provide correct trade data for Customs use, and develop SOPs with broker
  • Develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures to ensure compliance with evolving laws and regulations
  • Work with Canadian, Mexican, and US Tariff codes and matches them correctly, update and assign as needed or required by regulation
  • Accurately and thoroughly documents NAFTA qualification and determinations following government regulations and company policy; update systems of record accordingly
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other internal compliance groups and teams to keep product moving and minimize border delays
  • Coordinate and collaborate with purchasing, engineering, and other departments to make classification and country of origin determinations, document and invoice import assists on purchase orders and other transfers, and otherwise ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Manage and supervise team members in Milwaukee, Buffalo, and San Diego, and collaborate with leadership in other Americas locations to mentor and provide guidance for indirect trade compliance or logistics team members
  • Evaluate business cases for C-TPAT, Duty Drawback, FTZ, FTA's, and manages projects and programs to utilize the same
  • Develop training and train employees on regulations, company policy, and processes related to trade
  • Conduct audits of Brady sites for compliance gaps
  • Develop and maintain Best Practice KPI indicators
  • Evaluate and resolve/minimize potential trade compliance and hazardous materials shipping risks
  • Work as a team member on special projects as assigned by Director of Logistics, Senior Director Global Compliance, or other leaders
  • Identify and implement process improvements using root cause analysis and continuous improvement methodologies and implement automated solutions when possible to reduce variation and risk
  • Develop and deploy all applicable compliance processes and procedures in conjunction with other cross-functional and cross-divisional business areas as they relate to global trade and dangerous goods movement

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field or combination of school and work experience; broker's license preferred
  • 3-7 years of experience in trade compliance, global logistics, or trade-related field with at least 2 years of management experience
  • Working knowledge of Customs and Border Protection regulations (19 CFR), NAFTA, and reconciliation
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills, including the ability to advocate compliance positions and positively interact across all levels throughout the corporation
  • Compliance mindset with a desire to help the business succeed
  • Working knowledge of Google and Microsoft products such as Gmail, Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint
  • Good working knowledge of global ERP systems / Maquila software such as SAP, Oracle, Zoe, Aptean Tradebeam, i-export, etc.
  • Knowledge of NAFTA and other free trade agreements such as qualification, record keeping requirements, valuation, etc.
  • Must be a US Person, as defined in 22 CFR 120.15, have a valid passport, and be able to work in Brady's Tijuana, Mexico plant. (If no passport, must have the ability to acquire one within a reasonable period of time)
  • Knowledge of, experience with, and ability to maintain accurate, thorough, and up-to-date policies, compliance manuals, process documents, and other work instructions.
  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis and Continuous Improvement initiatives with proven ability to document, improve, mistake-proof, and streamline departmental and company procedures
  • Experience working with customs brokers, freight forwarders, government regulatory agencies

Desired Characteristics: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of US FDA policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with Canadian Customs rules and regulations and Canadian tariff code classification
  • Stable work history with progressive responsibility and experience
  • Demonstrated Project Management experience leading to successful outcomes
  • Working knowledge of Global Trade Management software
  • Spanish language capability
