Position Title – Sales Engineer

Position Summary:  The position of Sales Engineer is customer facing and serves as the lead technical resource for the Sales Account Teams and provides information to Finance, Product Management, Implementation, Operations and Network Engineering Teams as it relates to new business and customer requirements.  The Sales Engineer plays an integral part in strategic and tactical planning throughout the sales process and works closely with our customers and internal resources to uncover opportunities, to communicate the value of our network and services and to drive revenue for the business. In this capacity, the Sales Engineer is responsible for actively driving and managing the technology evaluation stage of the sales process, gathering customer inputs and requirements, working in conjunction with the Sales Account Managers as the key technical advisor and product advocate for our products and services.  The Sales Engineer must be able to articulate technology and product positioning to both business and technical users and identify all technical issues of assigned accounts to insure complete customer satisfaction through all stages of the sales process.

Essential Job Functions

Customer Facing Tasks:

  • Manage all technical aspects of the account relationship for the Sales Team.

  • Lead the technical discussion with Sales Team, customers and potential vendors in order to develop a viable solution that meets the customer’s needs.

  • Provide customer specific proposals with requirednetwork design components along with detailed presentations as required.

  • Work with Sales, Implementation and Network Engineering to ensure the designs meet customer’s requirements and are cost-effective.

  • Develop direct, personal relationships with customers via phone calls and face-to-face meetings to uncover opportunities and actively participate in the customer’s short and long term network planning needs.

  • Attend meetings and conference calls with existing and perspective customers.

  • Assist Marketing and Sales Teams by attending customer events and represent the organization at industry specific trade shows.


    Internal Tasks:

  • Responsible for utilizing established financial models and working with key internal resources in Implementation, Operations, Network Engineering and Finance to assemble scopes of work and capital and operational costs associated with each proposal.

  • Act as the liaison to Product Development, Implementation, Finance, Operations and Network Architecture teams for new business opportunities.

  • Work with Finance to evaluate financial returns utilizing established financial models and develop price points for each proposal that yield results that are in alignment with financial targets and corporate strategy

  • Responsible for assembling ‘pre-sales’ support material for each proposal for the Sales team and customer including quotes, detailed proposal documents, maps, diagrams, latency calculations, and outline of network benefits.

  • Assist Marketing and Sales Teams in technical preparation and presentation of RFQs/RFIs/RFPs/ customer presentations and marketing material.

  • Provide and assist in the development of contract documents as required.

  • Provide technical information and support to the implementation team for contracted opportunities as required.


  • Bachelor’s Degree (Engineering is Preferred) or equivalent experience in a related discipline

  • Valid driver’s license required

    Experience/Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ working within a Sales, Sales Engineering, Engineering organization which focuses on providing and implementing lit services other related products and services to enterprise and wholesale entities.

  • Experience and success with LAN, WAN, and WLAN design and implementation

  • Knowledge of Ethernet, IP, WDM and SONET/SDH technology

  • Knowledge of outside plant construction approaches and permitting requirements

  • Ability to travel throughout service territory
