Job Description

SUMMARY

Community Power Collective's (CPC) mission is to build power with tenants, street vendors, and transit riders, in working-class communities of color in Los Angeles, to create a solidarity economy, gain community control of land and housing, and form dignified public systems that facilitate a culture of collective care. We are a member-led organization, established in May 2020 in this formation, but carrying a legacy of 25 years of economic and housing justice organizing in the Eastside. CPC participates in and leads various housing justice, transit justice, and street vendor justice coalitions and movements in Los Angeles. CPC is also a sister organization with Fideicomiso Comunitario Tierra Libre (FCTL), a land trust in Boyle Heights, and we have a shared staffing structure.

The Director of Operations is a senior leadership position that will be responsible for overseeing CPC's day-to-day operations including the development of operations policy and processes, logistics for major events and retreats, onboarding and offboarding staff, overseeing all operations accounts and major contracts, and overseeing CPC's budgeting and fund development, including supervising 2 operations and fund development staff. This position will also provide support to FCTL's leadership team in their budgeting process and fund development.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Operations & Staffing
  • Lead the logistical planning of CPC's strategic planning process, yearly operational planning, and mid-year recalibrations.
  • Lead the Org Strategy Committee (internal staff committee that collectively implements operations-related projects) in developing, implementing, and evaluating org-wide tools that support organizational operations and implementation of program and committee goals. This includes new staff onboarding, org-wide work plans, individual work plans, program and committee team agenda templates, and offboarding documents.
  • Lead the Org Strategy Committee in developing, implementing, and evaluating org-wide policy and processes to ensure compliance with labor laws and alignment with CPC's values.
  • Oversee accounting administrative tasks performed by Operations Organizer, including expense receipts, invoices, credit card management, and management of external accounts including CPC domain, website, Google Workspace, Zoom, Loomy, EveryAction, Canva, Bitly, VEED, SurveyMonkey, and others.
  • Lead communication with Fiscal Sponsor on operations-related matters, including the budgeting process.
  • Support Program Leads in developing new staffing job postings and managing CPC's hiring process, including posting job descriptions to hiring platforms, tracking applicants, making initial phone calls, setting up hiring committees and interviews, and processing new hire paperwork with HR staff.
  • Support Program Leads in offboarding processes, ensuring exit interviews and equipment collection.

Budget & Contract Management
  • Manage processes of developing, negotiating, and complying with major contracts, such as outreach contracts with the City of Los Angeles, County of Los Angeles, and LA County Metro.
  • Oversee operational budget development, including supporting Program Leads in developing program budgets.
  • Update program budgeting and org-wide budgeting tools as needed.
  • In collaboration with FCTL's Director, manage the yearly budget for CPC/FCTL shared office space.

Fund Development
  • Work with Directors and Program Leads to assess fundraising needs and work with Org Strategy & Communications Directors to develop and implement a yearly fundraising plan.
  • Oversee planning and evaluation of fundraising events and projects.
  • Provide grant writing support to CPC's Fund Development Organizer and FCTL's Leadership Team.

Leadership and Supervision
  • Participate in bi-weekly Leads Meetings, including leading facilitation and note-taking on a rotating schedule.
  • Responsible for developing and implementing yearly Organizational Strategy Committee operational work plans.
  • Oversee and sign off on work projects developed by the Operations Organizer and Resourcing Organizer.
  • Provide 1 on 1 supervision to the Operations Organizer & Resourcing Organizer, including support in work plan development and long-term strategic development.

Mutual Support and Community Building
  • Work with organizers and staff in other program and committee areas to create a culture of organizing, strategy development, and transformation with a broader definition of what it means to build power, including mutual support.
  • Supports the planning and implementation of CPC organizational events.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Commitment to social and economic justice work that empowers communities.
  • 3+ years experience working in grassroots, member-led, social justice or labor organizations.
  • 2+ years leading operations and administrative work.
  • 2+ years experience supervising staff and teams.
  • Experience with event planning.
  • Extensive experience with common computer applications: MS Office, Google Workspace, and Zoom video teleconferencing systems.
  • Experience with basic accounting skills: invoicing, purchase orders, budgeting.
  • Experience with data entry in spreadsheets or online systems.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating team work plans.
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management and prioritization skills.
  • Experience writing grant proposals and reports.
  • Experience with basic contract compliance.
  • Experience with and understanding of funding, budgeting, reporting, and deliverables for a non-profit organization.
  • Above average writing skills.
  • Able to work independently while maintaining close communication with remote teams.
  • Ability to be visionary and innovative while inspiring team leadership.
  • Open to flexible hours and able to manage your time independently.
  • Ability to understand conversational Spanish.

PREFERED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with shared leadership & community-based consensus-building strategies.
  • Bilingual fluency (English/Spanish) and cultural competency.
  • Experience in multi-racial, multicultural settings.
  • Direct experience with base-building and grassroots organizing.
  • Experience with complex contract negotiations and compliance.
  • Experience with strategic planning processes.

COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, non-exempt salaried position. CPC has a set salary structure that aims to support lateral leadership. The set annual salary range for this position is $85,000 - $90,000. CPC is fiscally sponsored by the Right to the City Alliance (RTTC). RTTC offers a comprehensive benefits package including 100% employer paid medical, and dental insurance benefits for employees and dependent as well as short and long term disability and life insurance benefits for employees. Employees qualify for employer-matched 401K retirement plan after 1 year of employment. To support a healthy work-life balance, CPC observes a 2-week paid Winter break and a 1-week paid Summer break. On top of seasonal closures, all employees are also entitled to 9 paid holidays with set dates, 3 extra floating holidays, and 80 hrs of PTO (increases after year 2), front loaded at point of hire.
