Job Description


The Commercial Credit Review Group Manager (CCRGM) is a member of the Credit Review Senior Leadership Team reporting to the Director of Credit Review and is responsible for providing the Risk Committee of the Board and Senior Management with proactive and ongoing assessments of the level and direction of credit risk and the effectiveness and efficiency of credit management processes. The CCRGM leads the development and execution of a risk based annual examination plan, manages individual examination activities on an effective and efficient basis, and develops and leads a team of Credit Review Officers. The CCRMG also leads or participates in bank- wide or Credit Review special projects, and contributes to the preparation of Enterprise Risk Management and Risk Committee presentations. The CCRGM directs a team that evaluates risks inherent in new loan underwritings, the adequacy of risk recognition practices, the effectiveness of portfolio and problem loan management, and other key aspects of credit risk management. The CCGRM is also responsible for assessing and evaluating portfolio risk characteristics, portfolio performance, and emerging risks as well as root causes for deficiencies identified including Risk Issues that require management attention. The CCGRM interacts with senior line of business and credit managers and is responsible for providing timely, proactive and responsive communication including effective challenge and ensuring Credit Review communications and reporting are timely, clear, effective and concise.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties and special projects may be assigned.

  • Develops the design of the risk based annual examination plan. Manages resources and activities to the plan, ensures adequate coverage and provides status reporting.
  • Makes recommendations to improve examination or other Credit Review processes. Drives quality, efficiency and best practices.
  • Interfaces with Monitoring and Data Analytics to integrate ongoing review and monitoring into examination activities.
  • Examination: Conducts, manages or oversees tasks including but not limited to:
  • Pre-planning: conducting management interviews, analyzing portfolio data, partnering with the Credit Review Monitoring and Data Analytics teams, developing loan review samples and examination resource budgets, writing pre-exam memorandums and conducting examination kickoff meetings with the examination team.
  • Credit Review Officer (CRO) work flow, ensuring fieldwork is completed with high quality and according to examination plans and budgeted timelines. Fosters effective and timely team communications. Drives to identify context, themes and trends.
  • May review the most problematic and complex loans. Reviews and approves or oversees on a sample basis CRO prepared Asset Quality Reports (AQR) that document the reviewer's opinions of counterparty credit risk and credit risk management.
  • Consolidates examination findings, performs root cause risk analysis and develops formal recommendations to remediate risk concerns.
  • Plans, leads or oversees fieldwork, closing and management exit meetings.
  • Effectively communicates examination findings and conclusions with management. Considers feedback and develops formal, clear and concise written Risk Issues where required.
  • Ensures examination work papers, including electronic documentation, are comprehensive, complete and fully supportive of examination findings and conclusions. Adheres to and champions Credit Review quality controls.
  • Assists Credit Review leadership with CRO training needs including, but not limited to, mentoring CROs, driving product quality and consistency and best practices.
  • Ability to lead people through deadlines and changing circumstances. Ability to influence, develop and motivate.
  • Complying with all Credit Review policy and procedures both individually and ensuring team compliance as well.
  • Participates in and supports special projects as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree and 10+ years' combined experience as a commercial loan officer, underwriter, credit reviewer, or similar or closely aligned function. Graduate degree preferred. Supervisory experience required.

Must have commercial credit and credit analysis experience and have been involved in the analysis of complex credits in both corporate lending and commercial real estate. Formal credit and audit principles training are helpful. Prior bank examiner, audit or regulatory experience preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: CPA, CFA, BAI Loan Review Certification or RMA Credit Risk Certification (CRC) designation, preferred.
