Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) and the Oncology Division in the Department of Internal Medicine in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, at the University of Utah, are making a major investment in expanding our Translational Research Program in Breast Cancer. We are recruiting an outstanding clinician with an interest in forging collaborations with a vibrant team of clinicians and scientists. Our existing faculty conduct cutting-edge clinical and translational research in oncology, with a particular interest in biomarker-driven and/or practice-changing clinical trials, immunotherapy, genomics, and patient-derived xenografts and organoids. Collaborative teams at HCI also include an outstanding group of basic scientists working in breast cancer.
Applications are encouraged from Assistant, Associate, or Full Professors leading successful, NIH-funded research programs in this area. We are recruiting faculty candidates in either clinical or tenure track; rank depending on qualifications. The successful candidate will be appointed as a faculty member in the Department of Internal Medicine, and depending on qualifications, may have opportunity of appointment to a leadership position in the HCI Cancer Center. Candidates must have an MD or DO, and an established or highly promising translational research career with a track record of successful leadership/recruitment on clinical trials. Early-stage career investigators will be provided with a vigorous mentorship program. The successful candidate must be board certified in Medical Oncology, and must be eligible for a renewable medical license in the State of Utah.
The Department of Internal Medicine has seen double-digit clinical growth for several years and ranked 34th for all institutions, and 15th for state/public universities, with $49.8 M in total NIH funding in 2021. HCI is an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), supporting and fostering a vibrant cancer research enterprise in a highly collegial environment. HCI has an outstanding history of academic achievement and impact, with $100M extramural grant funding in 2021, a collaborative environment, and a commitment to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, training, community engagement, and service. HCI is a vigorous and growing Comprehensive Cancer Center, which scored in the "exceptional" range at its recent CCSG review. Part of the University of Utah, HCI includes over 230 cancer-focused research teams and has established outstanding programs in laboratory research, clinical cancer research, and cancer control and population sciences and cross-disciplinary disease centers that focus on areas of oncology. HCI's has an exceptional clinical trials office that supported nearly 800 patient recruitments on clinical trials in 2021. Our integrated health system and HCI's participation in the ORIEN network of leading cancer centers provide opportunities for multidisciplinary collaborations in basic and translational laboratory-based cancer research, epidemiology, and biostatistics, as well as population-based studies of childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancers and outcomes. In addition, the University of Utah and HCI are home to superb shared resources, such as the Utah Population Database with more than 11 million records linking genealogies, health records, and vital statistics, as well as the Utah Cancer Registry which is a long-standing and preeminent SEER site. HCI and University of Utah Health provide access to state-of-the-art equipment and services through exceptional core facilities (see www.cores.utah.edu), which serve to enhance both discovery and translational science.
The Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women's Cancers at HCI, a major hospital expansion, is underway, with a completion date of November 2022. The new patient care facility will allow HCI to grow by 220,000 ft2, adding 48 new inpatient hospital rooms and 4 ORs. It will
include five floors of clinical space, an expanded wellness and integrative health center, two floors of faculty offices and one floor available for future build-out based on patient needs. The Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women's Cancers will increase HCI's clinical care capacity by 50%.
Position Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications: 1) MD, or equivalent with appropriate post-doctoral training; 2) Must have an established track record of clinical trial leadership/enrollment and scientific accomplishments with extramural industry or peer-reviewed NIH funding; 3) Should have demonstrated administrative and leadership experience; 4) Must be eligible to work in the US.
