Responsible for developing and leading the clinical risk management activities to assess, plan, implement, investigate and evaluate all areas of risk to provide a safe environment and quality patient care. Duties also include administering the clinical risk management program on a day-to-day basis, coordinating the immediate response and follow-up activities for critical incidents, managing and analyzing risk data, conducting clinical risk management education programs, complying with risk management related standards by regulatory agencies with the objective of correcting, reducing, or eliminating identifiable risks that may adversely affect our patients, visitors, and employees or the quality of care provided to patients in our facility. Develops educational plans and/or delivers training designed to enhance patient safety and risk reduction. Provides consultation in the areas of patient safety and risk mitigation.
Conducts clinical risk assessments and analysis of complex organizational systems and facilitates development of corrective action plan, with an emphasis on intervention.
Participates in development of the annual Risk Reduction Plan and evaluation of the effectiveness of the Risk Management Program and develops/modifies goals as indicated.
Coordinates with Quality to develop plans of correction and/or root cause analyses for regulatory and accreditation agencies (DPH, Joint Commission, CMS) with respect to regulatory violations.
Coordinates with Quality to ensure corrective actions are implemented and sustained.
Works closely with Environment of Care (EOC), Hospital & Patient Safety regulatory criteria and other risk initiatives.
Coordinates with Quality to perform thorough investigations and develops Root Cause Analyses of significant events.
Leads clinical risk management activities and investigations.
Identifies occurrences that are potentially compensable events, and works with clinical staff to obtain appropriate documentation.
Coordinates with Legal Counsel to determine necessity of evidence retention and direct procedures for special handling.
Prepares and reports appropriate information to Legal Counsel; works closely with Legal Counsel on all risk events, action plans, and corrective actions.
Works with patients/families and visitors where appropriate to resolve issues and claims within the guidelines approved by Palomar Health.
Develops and implements policies and procedures to ensure all patients receive a high level of care. Provides advice on proposed policies and consent issues.
Assists in collaboration with internal stakeholders and insurance brokers, including completing applications.
Prepares Risk Reports in conjunction with Legal Counsel.
Utilizes data from incident reporting database and other information sources for trending and analysis of incidents to identify areas of high risk, develops proactive responses based on early trending.
Develops and implements educational programs for employees, medical staff and board members based on analysis of risk assessments, historical and concurrent occurrence and claims data, and national trends.
Interface with staff physicians to ensure communication and cooperation in risk management efforts.
Maintain an exchange of information with professional organizations, peers, and other resources to improve and update the program.
Encourages and consistently reinforces staff compliance with organizational policies, safety regulations, infection control procedures, ethics and compliance, risk management activities, universal protocol and proper body mechanics.
Participates in orientation for new employees regarding risk management.
Treats all information and data within the scope of the position with appropriate confidentiality and security.
Knowledgeable of, observes, and complies with hospital safety policies, emergency procedures, and standard precautions.
Speak and read English at a level that is sufficient to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the position. Knowledge of standard office equipment (i.e., calculator, fax, photocopier) and personal computer and computer software skills (i.e.,MS Windows, Excel, Access, Word, Powerpoint,internet, e-mail). Windows computer skills including proficient use of keyboarding, use of mouse or keys for functions such as selecting items, use of drop down menus, scroll bars, opening folders, copying and similar operationsrequiredupon employment or within the 1st two weeks of employment to perform the essential functions of the job. Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in health care field; BSN preferred Preferred Education: Masters Degree in Health related field or JD Minimum Experience: 5 years related healthcare experience; minimum 3 years Hospital Risk Management Preferred Experience: 5 years healthcare experience; minimum 5 years Hospital Risk Management Required Certification: Certified Professional Health Risk Management Preferred Certification: Required License: Valid Driver's License Preferred License: Current CA RN License
