JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for:

A Registered Nurse who provides and coordinates educational activities which promote the continuing development of nursing personnel, non-nursing personnel and providers in the assigned clinical region on a 24-hour basis. These activities include competency validation and other planned programs and activities that are based on identified learning needs and that are reflective of current advances in nursing clinical practice. Also provides quality assurance supervision, perinatal data base supervision, coordination of patient education, policy and protocol coordination. Represents Maternity Care Services on various committees. Specific duties of the CNS supporting an intermediate NICU include:

  1. Directing the clinical nursing practice in the NICU
  2. Coordination and assessment of critical care educational development and clinical competency of the nursing staff in the NICU
  3. Ensuring continued neonatal critical care nursing competency through educational programs for both the newly-hired and experienced nursing staff
  4. Consultation with staff on complex neonatal critical care nursing issues
  5. Oversight of comprehensive parent and or primary caretaker education activities
  6. Ensuring the implementation of a coordinated and effective discharge planning program

Internal Relationships:

Maintains collaborative relationships with all leadership, educators, staff and physicians. Is a member of the Perinatal Executive Committee, Maternity Care Multidisciplinary Committee, and other committees as necessary. Collaborates with the social worker and discharge planner to ensure a coordinated and effective discharge-planning program.

External Relationships:

Maintains collaborative relationships with appropriate community organizations and neonatal/perinatal and pediatric services.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of accredited nursing program
  • Master’s degree in nursing

LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

  1. Current California Registered Nurse Licensure
  2. Current California Clinical Nurse Specialist License
  3. Current BLS, NRP, and PALS
  4. Current certification in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing from a nationally recognized accrediting organization, i.e., the NCC
  5. Have evidence of current instructor status of the NRP course of the AAP and AHA.

EXPERIENCE

  • Three years of recent acute care nursing experience
  • At least two years of full-time clinical experience in neonatal nursing care at least one of which shall have been in neonatal nursing in a NICU that is equivalent to a Regional, Community, or Intermediate NICU
  • At least one year of experience in teaching and developing educational programs with demonstrated knowledge of adult learning theory

PREREQUISITE SKILLS

  1. Excellent verbal and written skills to work effectively with staff, physicians, patients and the community
  2. Knowledge of medical terminology, medical procedures, pharmacology and anatomy/physiology
  3. Knowledge of computer applications, including word processing and database creation and management
  4. Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks
  5. Ability to accurately summarize data and protocols/goals
  6. Ability to manage and maintain confidential materials

Employees in this position have access to protected health information. The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographics, date of service, insurance/billing, medical record summary information, and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL (not modifiable)

Patient Care

  1. Provides some direct nursing care, primarily as a teaching tool, to Neonatal, Perinatal, and Pediatric patients in high-risk situation; may fill in if needed at times of crisis in the department.
  2. Participates indirectly in delivering patient care by assisting nursing staff in planning care for high-risk patients, and serves as a resource in identifying nursing diagnosis.
  3. Collaborates with physicians and health care team members in planning, implementing and evaluating care in order to assure coordination of care for patients in Women's, Infants' and Children's Services.
  4. Serves as a liaison between physicians, patients, families and health team members.
  5. Coordinates preceptors for students and new staff.

Education

  1. Participates in parent education programs in collaboration with other team members.
  2. Develops and utilizes patient teaching tools.
  3. Coordinates the units neonatal, perinatal and pediatric nursing education programs.
  4. Assists with maintaining and validating clinical competencies of all the team members.
  5. Serves as a role model to the staff.
  6. Serves as a preceptor to staff during cross training, constantly taking opportunity to increase competencies of RN's, CNA's, Support and Clerical Team Members.
  7. Presents lectures, in-service and conferences related to Women's, Infants' and Children's Services.

Administrative

  1. Participates in formulating and implementing policies, procedures and standards of care to patients and families in Women's, Infants' and Children's Services.
  2. Maintains current knowledge of CCS/The Joint Commission requirements impacting Women's, Infants' and Children's Services.
  3. Manages the Perinatal Data System.
  4. Develops and implements quality assurance programs.
  5. Supervises and evaluates nursing staff in Women's, Infants' and Children's Services including CNA's and RN's.

Consultation/collaboration

  • Acts as a nurse consultant to other disciplines in the area of Neonatal, Perinatal and Pediatric.
  • Acts as a resource/consultant to the staff for planning and evaluating patient care outcomes by implementing the nursing process.

Professional Development

  1. Assumes responsibility for maintaining current knowledge and competency in the area of specialization.
  2. Utilizes direct patient care experiences to maintain clinical knowledge and skills.
  3. Participates in activities, which further professional growth and development.
