JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision the Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) facilitates a multi-disciplinary and collaborative approach in the provision of healthcare within a specialty area. The Clinical Nurse Consultants are "clinical experts" in evidence-based nursing practice within a specialty area, treating and managing the health concerns of patients and populations to promote quality patient outcomes. With responsibility for monitoring and sustaining excellence in the provision of nursing care through the support and development of clinical standards of practice, implementation of education, and establishing competency for staff members, the CNC will demonstrate a firm knowledge base and clinical expertise, function as a clinical resource, conduct and facilitate patient care consultation, and assess the impact of appropriate practice on patient outcomes. The CNC will support clinical rounds with the multi-disciplinary health care team and work closely and collaboratively with all disciplines to establish and provide collegial relationships that benefit our staff, patients and the community.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Expert clinical responsibilities (45-60% of role): Functions as an expert clinician in an area of nursing specialty. Provides clinical oversight, mentors and evaluates the management of complex care to select patients/families as an expert clinician and role model. Works closely with all nursing staff as a clinical preceptor to provide and evaluate hands on patient care.

Consultant responsibilities: Enhances the quality of patient care by providing consultation to care providers and nurse educators. Recognizes age/diversity specific needs and issues of customers served.

Quality improvement, Evidence-based Practice and Research responsibilities: Supports, participates and leads research activities.

Educator responsibilities: Facilitates education and orientation of the nursing staff.

Leadership responsibilities: Demonstrates effective leadership skills when planning, problem solving and evaluating nursing practice. Works cohesively as part of the Acute Care administrative team to maintain clinical alignment with Inpatient and Organizational goals and expectations. Promotes profession of nursing through participation and encouragement of staff in shared governance activities.

Scholarly and Professional activities: Active participation in scholarly and professional activities. Maintains clinical expertise by networking within specialty area of practice. Actively works to prepare for specialty certification.

Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Required Skills

Knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the medical/surgical patient problems and conditions.
Knowledge of how to record observations, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures, multisystem monitoring data, and other data relevant to the patient's care in a retrievable form.
Knowledge of culture and diversity of the Native population.
Knowledge of relevant educational content and appropriate methods of delivery and the ability to develop and facilitate relevant and effective education for adult learners.
Knowledge on collecting pertinent information related to potential educational needs of the nurse, assess this data to determine the target audience and the learner needs, implement the program and evaluate a program and revise as necessary.
Knowledge of a variety of educational options such as academic education, experiential learning, consultation, teaching others, professional reading, distance learning, research, and self-directed activities.
Skill in assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the plan of care and plan of care is patient/family-centered, developmentally and age-appropriate, and culturally relevant.
Skill in initiating treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures based on appropriate utilization of procedures and protocols.
Skill in collaborating in developing and evaluating standards of practice and competency standards for staff members.
Skills to develop activities to facilitate learners' achievement of the educational objectives.
Skills to ensure planned educational activities are implemented and the knowledge to conduct comprehensive evaluations of all educational activities.

Required Experience

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
Masters of Science in Nursing (MS or MSN) in a degree program that adheres to National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialist standards for education preparation with eligibility for certification in specialty, OR a BSN with the ability to complete MSN Clinical Specialist or equivalent specialty education within 48 months of date of hire with eligibility for certification in specialty.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Non-supervisory – Five (5) years registered nursing experience in area of specialty which demonstrates leadership skills and ability to work within a team environment, effective communication, interpersonal and organizational skills, data analysis and research interpretation skills, and computer/word processing skills.

MINIMUM CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
Must be licensed as a RN by the State of Alaska and remain active with all annual licensing requirements. Current Basic Life Support card. Current ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC, etc card as required for specific work area. Has participated in 30 hours every 2 years continuing education in nursing in general, 16 of which are in the specific area of practice. Position requires a Wound Care certification.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Experience with developing and conducting staff and patient education programs preferred.

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Work involves the potential for exposure to infectious diseases. ANMC is not a latex free environment therefore some latex exposure can be expected. May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.

PREFERRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION
National certification is preferred.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job: Must be able to lift approximately 50 pounds.
