Job Description
Shift III: 4:00 pm to 12:00 am
Purpose of Position: Under the general supervision of the Asst. Director, Laboratory Director and Associate Exec. Director, this individual supervises Hematology Laboratory and performs a full range of services as assigned.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
a. Provides direction, leadership, and technical training for Point-of-Care testing (POCT) throughout the KCH and other appropriate lab personnel; assigns, coordinates, reviews, and monitors their work in a variety of settings; presents constructive feedback and suggestions on activities of subordinates to senior staff.
•Under the direction of appropriate clinical personnel, conducts, directs and/or leads complex and routine clinical laboratory tests, examinations, and /or chemical analyses.
•Communicates pertinent information to laboratory management especially problems and non-conformances.
•Prepares work schedules of subordinates.
•Allocates all resources efficiently to ensure proper coverage.
•Manages personnel effectively.
•Complies with all policies and procedures.
•Demonstrates abilities to solve problems.
•Checks arrival and departure times.
•Ensures timely turn-around time of samples received in the laboratory.
•Ensures that the reagent and other laboratory supplies are used within the Laboratory Guidelines (e.g. reagents are dated when received and when opened before placing on the instrument.)
•Provides overall leadership assuring a high level of performance for the clinical processes and operational activities.
•Monitors examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performances are maintained.
•Checks and monitors maintenance of instruments.
•Checks and monitors that quality control is performed and recorded; assures that all remedial actions are taken if necessary.
•Ensures that all system functions are within established performance specifications.
b. Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications; in the event of non-conformances, ensures that results of test examinations are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning.
•Monitors that proper record keeping practice is maintained (includes storage and retrieval of data).
•Ensures that employees follow correct specimen handling procedures.
•Oversees the preparation of packages for shipment within the guidelines of established KCHC laboratory policy and procedures.
•Ensures proficiency testing is performed according to KCHC guidelines.
•Ensures proper function checks (e.g. linearity/precision, and correlation are performed).
•Ensures that specimens are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner (pneumatic tube handling).
•Ensures proper reporting of results to the clinicians in accordance with KCHC Guidelines.
c. Provides training and annual evaluations and documents the performance of testing subordinates.
•Documents competence assessments for testing personnel.
•Participates in Q.A. activities to ensure the quality of laboratory performance.
•Ensures the smooth flow of the day-to-day operation in the laboratory.
•Documents supervisory review even when responsibility is delegated to another trained and competent technical person.
•Performs some administrative tasks and other related tasks required by Hematology Lab. manager/director.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist issued by the NYSED; and
2. Candidates must also meet one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined in Title 1 0, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public HeaIth Law.
