Job Overview: The Clinical Director (SLCD) reports to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer. The Clinical Director provides operational leadership and direction to the patient care areas reporting to the position. In addition to direct operational responsibilities, the Clinical Director is a member of the senior Patient Care Services leadership team and is also responsibility for execution of strategic initiatives and project leadership and oversight.

The Clinical Director may perform the following duties:

  • Administrative Leadership
    • Demonstrates integrity, commitment, and professionalism in providing transformational and tribal leadership and direction for all care activities within the department by operationalizing tactics to realize TCH’s Enterprise’s vision.
    • Works to foster high reliability and integrate performance improvement processes in patient care areas, consistently engaging staff in decision making whenever possible.
    • Embraces the Magnet Standards as part of strategic and operational planning and execution.
    • Assists Senior Nurse Executives (CNO, ACNO) with responsibilities in assuring organizational standards of practice, support the mission, goals and objectives of the hospital, nursing, and patient care services.
    • Collaborates with service line leadership as appropriate.
    • Serves as the Associate Chief Nursing Officer in his/her absence.
    • Provides leadership to a defined group of nurse managers, advanced practice providers, educators, and other leadership personnel and staff members to ensure business objectives are achieved.
    • Participates in nursing administration, hospital, medical staff committees, task forces and/or special projects as assigned or as appropriate to area of expertise or responsibility.
    • Participates collaboratively in governance at various levels throughout the hospital and alliance.
    • Ensures that licensure and accreditation requirements are met for areas of responsibility.
    • Ensures compliance with all regulatory bodies (i.e. CMS, Joint Commission, ODH)
    • Works with the clinical quality committees to coordinate PI activities within areas of responsibility.
    • Works with Risk Management in investigating all major injuries and adverse occurrences to employee solutions that support a highly reliable, zero defect environment.
    • Guides the development and provision of programs and systems to assure high quality care delivery and maintain staff effectiveness and competency in an effort to assure TCHHN’s mission of “best in class”.
    • Establishes goals and objectives for areas of responsibility which support the strategic plan of the organization as well as the strategic plan for patient care services and the service line.
    • Delegates appropriate responsibility and accountability for designated management activities.
    • Conducts regular leadership meetings.
    • Ensures direct reports maintain/achieve necessary competencies for their job functions.
    • Supports professionalism through ethical conduct, appearance, positive communication, attendance and holding self-accountable for work completion.
    • Leads and participates in councils, task forces, and special projects as assigned or requested and provides opportunities for members of the service line to do the same.
    • Ensures that patient satisfaction targets are achieved and maintained.
    • Ensures and supports ongoing customer service training, coaching, and education for areas of responsibility. Implements TCH Enterprise customer service standards and principles in management functions, hiring, discipline and recognition.
  • Operations
    • Develops and implements operating plans for clinical areas and nursing functions so that strategic objectives are realized.
    • Provides oversight, support and coordination for daily operations of inpatient nursing as well as patient caresupport department comprising as assigned.
    • Ensures that appropriate resources are available to areas of responsibility.
    • Oversees management of patient throughput and capacity.
    • Validates the adequacy of staffing plans and recommends changes as appropriate.
    • Coordinates house-wide facility and environmental projects which impact patient care.
    • Ensures that processes guiding the provision of care are appropriately implemented and evaluated (regulations, standards, policy/procedures).
    • Ensures responses to unplanned occurrences, emergencies, or disasters that have the risk and potential for impacting services delivered.
    • Provides back-up and support as needed for Nursing Supervisors.
    • Ensures professional practice model and unit-based care delivery models support family/patient centered care model while maximizing resources and productivity with respect for individual rights, preferences, ethnicity, culture and diversity.
    • Ensures safe and therapeutic environment is maintained for patients, personnel, physicians, and visitors.
    • Ensures the nursing process is utilized in care delivery.
    • Evaluates effectiveness of unit operations, care delivery and appropriateness of care according to professional standards and guidelines.
    • Coordinates patient care with other healthcare disciplines and assists in integrating services across the continuum of health care.
  • Finance
    • Utilizes the budget process to effectively mentor the nurse managers in strategic planning and resource management.
    • Analyzes data, statistics, patient trends etc. to provide input toward the appropriate prediction of patient days and revenue projections for areas of responsibility.
    • Participates in and mentors direct reports and staff in the annual capital and expense budget process.
    • Participates in the prioritization of budget objectives.
    • Establishes benchmark performance criteria for divisions (HPPD etc.).
    • Provides direction, support, and/or coordination in researching financial considerations for objectives, new projects, proposals, etc.
    • Provides support in evaluating charges and opportunities for revenue and efficiency enhancements.
    • Maintains a working and collaborative relationship with the finance department.
    • Educates direct reports in financial principles.
    • Accountable for establishment of performance metrics and follow through to achieve desired organizational objectives.
    • Relates budget to organization and service line strategic plans.
  • Professional Practice and Professional Development
    • Maintains an environment that supports nursing leadership development to maximize professional and personal growth.
    • Ensures all practice is evidence based.
    • Promotes, supports and ensure that the shared governance model is executed within the division of patient care services
    • Participates in and encourages direct reports and staff to participate in nursing research, publication and professional presentation. Encourages direct reports and staff to be active in professional organizations.
    • Promotes an atmosphere of lifelong learning within division and holds self and direct report accountable for execution on that philosophy.
    • Coaches, mentors and provides guidance to both internal and external customers to support development across the profession.
    • Ensures positive experiences for students are accomplished throughout the service line.
    • Maintains and seeks responsibility for self-development.
    • Evaluates performance of self and direct reports based on professional practice standards relevant statutes, rules and regulations and organizational criteria.
    • Participates in organization’s leadership development programs.
    • Networks with colleagues to share ideas, trends, and innovations in areas of responsibility.
    • Maintains membership and association in professional nursing organizations and ensures incorporation of standards into operations to keep current with community and national practice trends.
    • Shares knowledge and information with peers and throughout the service line and encourages changes in practice based on research and scientific principles.
    • Appropriately represents nursing, the service line, and/or the hospital in the community.
    • Seeks out and participates in community service activities to enhance the opportunities of the service line.
    • Serves as a role model for employees in providing service to TCHHN’s customers; promotes recognition of employees and customers, which includes patient, families, physicians, other departments and peers.


Education: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing. Masters in Nursing or other related field required such as business, health administration, hospital administration required.

License & Certification: Current RN licensure in the state of employment.

Experience: Minimum of five (5) years progressive leadership positions.
