Job Summary

The neonatal clinical research nurse functions independently to coordinate and oversee multiple neonatal clinical research protocols.  Responsible for the complete coordination of clinical research activities.  This specifically includes work as lead site coordinator for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s participation in the NICHD Neonatal Research Network.  Administers clinical research procedures as needed or required.  Documents all information as required by the protocol.  Must be highly organized and flexible in order to meet the needs of the various investigators and the unique needs of the neonatal patient population.

Job Responsibilities

  • Establishes studies in local NICUs (CHOP, HUP). Collaborates with all medical, nursing and allied health staff to facilitate the introduction of study protocols; coordinates procurement of necessary equipment and supplies. 
  • Liaises with pharmacy, laboratory, radiology and other ancillary services as needed to ensure that study protocols are carried out correctly.
  • Responsible for patient assessment and recruitment; applies professional nursing skills to screen and identify appropriate candidates for study. Reviews patient referrals, keeps track of intakes from various referral sources.
  • Informs families about study protocol and procedures. Explains benefits, risks and study schedules prior to obtaining informed consent. Obtains formal informed and signed consent.  Collaborates with PI or designee when appropriate and necessary to obtain informed consent.
  • Manages the day to day operations of multiple studies and ensures that all aspects of the study protocols are carried out in an efficient, accurate and timely manner. Ensures the safety and comfort of the study patients in accordance with all current standards of research ethics.
  • Collects all study data and submits them electronically to the data center accurately and on time. Resolves all data queries.
  • Files and maintains source documentation, clinical records, etc, according to HIPAA regulations. Once study goal is achieved, arranges for safe and orderly exit of patients from the project. Collects information on adverse events.
  • Manages study finances including sponsor invoicing when necessary and billing.
  • Coordinates with IT and EPIC staff to establish computer-based orders for all study procedures.
  • Collaborates with research staff at other local NRN site hospitals to ensure consistent implementation of protocols across sites.
  • Participates in local research meetings as well as multicenter conference calls, trainings, and committee meetings.
  • Keeps abreast of current professional and practical healthcare developments to maintain the necessary expertise in the knowledge, skills and technology demanded by each study.
