Chief Scientist - Cementitious Materials
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a multi-program laboratory operated by Battelle for the US DOE. The Radiological Materials and Detection (RMD) group at PNNL is a world leader in development and testing of materials for immobilization of nuclear and hazardous wastes. Specific areas of noted expertise are in formulation, synthesis, and characterization of vitreous materials. RMD has experience in low temperature waste forms as well, and is looking to hire a senior cement scientist/engineer to develop and lead a program of research focused on formulating and processing low-temperature waste forms to immobilize nuclear wastes. The successful candidate will be an integral member of an inter-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and program managers and will help build and lead a program of research work in the area of low temperature materials synthesis and performance assessment to develop advanced cement-based waste forms capable of assimilating and immobilizing the wide variety of chemicals and radionuclides found in nuclear wastes.
This individual will provide technical leadership to a team of junior and senior scientists in the nuclear waste form area. In addition to leading world class research, this position will drive business development efforts that align with lab wide business sector and contribution plans, and will help develop impactful and long-term business strategies. As such, the incumbent will lead prospective research projects and interface with external clients (i.e., Department of Energy (DOE) and industry) to generate new and repeat business and to grow PNNL’s technical capabilities.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
This applicant will be an acknowledged technical expert in cement-based materials. This senior research position will lead high-impact research proposals, integrate research with existing activities in the group and directorate through teamwork and mentoring, and extend the group’s and directorate’s capabilities. Initial responsibilities in this position will include research and development in developing and evaluating the performance of low-temperature waste forms and process control strategies in support of the Hanford tank waste cleanup mission.
This senior researcher will advance the state of the art in this field; will be a technical resource and mentor to staff across PNNL; and will be responsible for the following duties in addition to those listed above:
- Will lead major projects with Laboratory-level impact, manage complex and interdisciplinary projects and tasks, and work with project teams spread across organizational boundaries and outside of the Laboratory.
- Provide leadership in identifying, promoting and developing appropriate new technical capabilities within the EED directorate with an emphasis on waste form development, characterization, and performance assessment.
- Will lead proposals to pursue new areas of R&D that meet organizational long- term strategic goals, participate in planning Laboratory-wide initiatives and/or sector or product line strategies, and be able to fund self, projects, initiatives and other senior staff through business development activities in the materials arena.
- Develop project management plans for complex projects, take the lead in scoping, scheduling, and budgeting complex interdisciplinary projects and programs, and may be involved in planning for long-term technical capabilities that have a national impact.
- Will conceive, plan, and conduct research that may have considerable influence on scientific knowledge or technological developments, and develop advanced technological ideas and guide development into a final product.
- Primary author or contributor on a significant number of literature publications or reports; presents papers at national meetings; may present invited papers. May develop intellectual property leading to publications, copyrights and/or patents.
- Help develop plans for new equipment and for new testing and characterization methods.
- Organize and chair sessions at national meetings; present invited papers; provide overview of activities and results with visitors and speakers.
- May participate on peer reviews and book chapters and continue to expand a significant record of peer-reviewed publications, reports, presentations, intellectual property, and/or technical products.
- Lead the direction of laboratory strategies in the area of nuclear waste forms and process control strategies to support future facility operations.
- To the assigned Team Leader for performance in meeting staff development goals, safe and high quality conduct of work, and meeting training requirements.
- To the Project Management Office Director for the proper management of project scope, schedule, and budget responsibilities.
- To the Sector Manager for the coordination of business development activities and management of client relationships.
- To the Cognizant Space Manager(s) of laboratories in which research is conducted for operating to the standards and within the approved envelope for the laboratory space.
- To the Group Manager for assigned contributions to the group strategy.

Bachelor's degree with 9 years experience or a Master's degree with 7 years experience or a PhD with 5 years experience.

-Must have an advanced level of knowledge and direct working experience in one or more of the following areas: cement chemistry, geopolymers, immobilization of hazardous wastes, nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear waste policy, nuclear waste generation and immobilization processes, understanding of Hanford legacy nuclear waste, strategies regarding disposition of used nuclear fuel, fuel recycling, etc.
- Must have a well-established national/international research reputation with distinguished professional achievements.
- Must have a strong publication record, including authoring seminal reports and publications.
- Position requires demonstrated leadership of multidisciplinary efforts to provide solutions to complex problems where the problems are characterized by lack of precedents, source material, or lack of prior success.
- Ability to effectively communicate within a team environment and through presentation of technical work to senior scientists, management and external peers and clients.
- Excellent technical writing skills and a track record of published peer-reviewed journal articles.
- Demonstrated success at proposal development and project management,
- Orientation toward advancing state of the art technologies and demonstrated technical versatility to work with multi-discipline projects.
- Must have demonstrated an advanced understanding not only of cementitious materials but is also familiar with application of those materials to immobilization of wastes in general, and nuclear wastes in particular.
- An understanding of the Hanford cleanup challenge is a plus.
- Excellent leadership skills to develop vision and strategy; effectively execute program development; attract, mentor and develop senior level talented staff; and generate a pipe-line of new business.
- This position requires the ability to establish and manage client relationships, lead interdisciplinary, cross-organizational teams, and attract significant programmatic R&D funding.
- Must have demonstrated project management and business development capabilities at a level of $1M/year or more.
- Be able to show leadership in developing new technical capabilities, and show strategic decision-making influence on multiple, inter-disciplinary projects across a large organization.
- Have the influence to be able to set or approve technical approaches to solve client problems at a national or international level.
- BS Degree with 9+ years; M.S. Degree with 7+ years; or PhD with 5+ years of experience in the following areas: Materials Science, Ceramic Engineering, Chemistry, Geochemistry, Chemical, Civil or Nuclear Engineering.
- Prefer PhD with 8+ years of applicable experience, plus notable professional achievements in the field(s).
