NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem is part of the City’s public health care system, proudly providing a wide range of services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. The hospital is notably credited for saving the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1958, when he was stabbed in the chest while visiting a local bookstore. Today, NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem continues to be a primary resource for medical practice and education for a heterogeneous mixture of professionals who are pursuing careers in health care and are dedicated to service in medically underserved areas.
NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem is the largest hospital in Central Harlem, capable of treating the most seriously ill. The Hospital provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, including same-day surgery in our Aubrey S. Maynard Ambulatory Surgery Unit, behavioral health services, community substance abuse treatment, dentistry, and oral surgery. The hospital is a 272-bed acute care facility and a designated Level 1 Trauma Center, with a full spectrum of specialty services, including a burn unit, an adult intensive care unit, a neonatal intensive care unit, a pediatric intensive care unit, and a cardiac care unit.
Under the direction of the President, the CEO plans, organizes, directs, and manages facility operations, and implements policies and procedures. Responsibilities include making operational decisions that align with long-term goals and performance expectations; achieving financial sustainability by successfully managing the facility’s annual budget; providing general supervision, programming, and on-going evaluation of care and services to improve outcomes and the patient experience and engage new business; and ensuring the health and safety of patients, visitors, and staff, as well as compliance with all applicable local, state, federal and NYC Health + Hospitals rules, regulations, and standards of care.
