Job Description

Sturgeon Electric Company, Inc. a subsidiary of MYR Group Inc., one of the largest and oldest electrical subcontractors in the nation is currently seeking candidates for a Chief Estimator.  This role will support electrical construction projects within the commercial and industrial industry.


The Chief Estimator will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing the estimating team for various electrical commercial and industrial construction projects.  This includes administering operating budgets, staffing, work assignments, salary, and performance reviews.  The Chief Estimator will also support and administer all department standards and procedures as well as responsible for the final review and approvals of estimate packages for accuracy and completeness. This position is located in the Auburn, WA district office and will require travel.


Duties included but not limited to:

  • Take on leadership functions within the estimating department
  • Review and evaluate requests for estimates
  • Perform conceptual estimates
  • Prepare weekly bid calendar and ensure timely completion of estimates
  • Review estimates and revisions for completeness and accuracy
  • Maintain and improve precision database
  • Develop and maintain cost data, including labor and equipment rates, installation methods and production rates
  • Develop and maintain estimating procedures and guidelines
  • Prepare reports as needed
  • Set departmental budget
  • Determine constructability requirements
  • Lead, direct, and audit the work of assigned staff; act as a mentor
  • Advise staff of company policy expectations
  • Coordinate employee performance reviews
  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Job Requirements


    • 10 yrs or more of experience estimating new construction, maintenance and retrofit projects for various projects (i.e. hospitals, judicial, correctional facilities, business/retail, tenant improvement)
    • 5 yrs or more in a lead estimator or manager role   
    • Knowledgeable of the N.E.C and local codes
    • Able to read and understand civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, etc. plans and specifications to include blue prints, proposals and other documents as they relate to the electrical work
    • Knowledgeable with a wide variety of electrical materials and methods of installation
    • Prior experience with budget and department planning
    • Proficient with vendor review and analysis process
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and Accubid estimating software
    • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management or related field desirable but not essential
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, verbal, written, and communication skills
    • Team player and able to work with various partners from start to finish
