College Marketing Statement

The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is the flagship medical school of the University System of Georgia, the state’s only public medical school, and one of the top 5 largest medical schools in the United States.  Founded nearly 200 years ago in 1828 as the nation’s fifth public medical school, the third medical school in the Southeast and the thirteenth in the nation, MCG has risen to its current role optimizing health care in Georgia and beyond through education, discovery, and service. 

The Medical College of Georgia educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, as well as three regional clinical campuses for third-and fourth-yearstudents and a second four-year campus in Athens, Georgia in partnership with the University of Georgia.  The state’s medical school also offers clinical training in more than 200 sites across the state providing students experience in the full spectrum of medicine, from tertiary/quaternary care hospitals to small-town solo practices.  MCG and its teaching hospitals provide postgraduate education to nearly 500 residents in 44 different programs.  More than 51 percent of MCG graduates remain in Georgia to practice, well above the average retention rate of 39 percent.  In 2016 MCG graduated more than twice the number of physicians going into primary care and core specialties – like family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, and general surgery – than any other medical school in the state of Georgia. 

Our researchers and clinicians focus on illnesses that affect most of Georgia and America’s children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine, and genomics.  They also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 80 clinics and hospitals statewide.


Department Marketing Statement

Our department strives to deliver quality patient care, educate radiology residents and function as a problem-solving resource for Georgia’s physicians.  All modalities and areas of diagnostic radiology are provided, including cardiothoracic imaging, musculoskeletal radiology, abdominal imaging, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine, mammography, emergency radiology, interventional radiology, pediatric radiology, OB/ultrasound, cardiac nuclear radiology and nuclear medicine PET/CT.  The department offers a total of 20 ACGME accredited diagnostic radiology positions and 3 fellowship positions in Neuroradiology and Interventional Radiology.  Residents learn from 22 fellowship-trained clinical faculty members in their respective sections and 3 physicists, most of which actively participate in research projects not only within radiology but also in the area of quality improvement.

The Department of Radiology is currently in a strategic alliance with Philips Health. This alliance has allowed significant growth of the department by providing the most state of the art equipment. Our facilities include 3 CT, 3 MRI, 2 IR, 2 SPECT/CT, 1 Gamma Camera, 1 PET/CT, 7 GE Ultrasound in the General Lab, 5 Ultrasound in the OBGYN clinic, 3 VIR suites, 4 R&F and multiple diagnostic X-rays.  We also utilize the latest in PACS and dictation system, which are Philips iSite/Intellispace Portal and Powerscribe 360, respectively.  The annual studies performed in FY17 were 43,717 CT, 10,520 IR and 17,661 MRI.  Total procedures were 245,061.

Job Information

The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Radiology and Imaging.  The successful applicant must qualify for a faculty appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, have an outstanding record of academic accomplishments, and demonstrate excellence in clinical radiology, education, and research.  The search committee will evaluate evidence of the ability to lead, mentor, manage and clinically participate in an academic unit in a university-based setting. The Chair plays a pivotal role in building, supervising and participating in clinical programs that are part of the Augusta University enterprise.  The Chair reports to the Dean and will serve as the department’s academic and administrative leader, providing direction in research; educational programs; facultyrecruitment, retention and development; budget management and oversight; and strategic planning.  The successful candidate must articulate a vision that enhances the excellence of the department, fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across the University, and undertakes new initiatives that maintain and expand the existing departmental, clinical, research, and teaching missions. 


Minimum Requirements

Candidates must hold an MD, DO, MD/PhD or DO/PhD degree, current board certification in radiology, eligible for licensure in the state of Georgia and academic accomplishments that merit tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The ideal candidate will be an academic radiologist with a distinguished record of clinical care and teaching with national stature.  She/he will have demonstrated success as a leader in a department or division of radiology, of an interdisciplinary institute, or of an academic entity of comparable size and scope.  In addition, the successful candidate will have:

  • A national reputation as an academic leader
  • Experience in the development and successful implementation of new clinical programs and services while growing existing radiologic and imaging services.
  • A successful track record of recruitment, retention and development of faculty, trainees, staff and students. 
  • A record of solid performance as a skilled leader with the ability to grow revenues, meet budgets, and measure and improve productivity and quality outcomes.
  • A proven track record of working collaboratively across clinical disciplines as well as with senior management.
  • Ability to drive and partner on philanthropic activities.
  • Appreciation of the need to engage the community and develop strong relationships with the goals of enhancing medical studenteducation.
  • A commitment to advancing the research initiatives within the department, especially related to fellowship programs.
