Category Manager (Can be located in any major Midwest city with a preference of Minneapolis or Chicago)

Our client is a leading national full-line food ingredient distributor! They have over 60 years of demonstrated experience, are over $500 million in size and are in an aggressive growth mode! We have been retained to find a talented Category Manager! 

This role will have both day-to-day procurement to grow the margins and profitability of each category of ingredients. This role will be responsible for margin growth by procuring ingredients, understanding ingredient and category trends, developing and managing supplier relationships, developing category strategies and plans, working with pricing on price inputs, and working with sales and customer service personnel to grow volume, revenue and margin. 


  • Behaves as the ?general manager? of the category spend
  • Analyzes data or insights to determine industry and consumer trends
  • Devises short and long-term development strategies for product categories
  • Develops exit strategies for unsuccessful products
  • Fosters trust relationships with suppliers to understand their strategies, develop mutual goals, achieve better pricing, and quality of service
  • Manages inventories in conjunction with the Planning group to ensure customer demands are met and avoid obsolete inventory
  • Determines the positioning of a product category to maximize profitability and revenue
  • Liaises with pricing, marketing, and sales teams to determine competitive pricing and promotional activities of product categories
  • Collaborates with sales and marketing to expand product categories and total supply chain solutions
  • Responsible for budget development, revenue and managing delivery for category
  • Provides deep functional and technical strategic sourcing and procurement expertise in various categories and develops, manages, and implements strategic sourcing initiatives
  • Develops category and supplier strategies proactively and collaboratively through on-going market and spend analysis


  • BS/BA in business administration, marketing, finance, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 5years of Profit & Loss (P&L) business leadership responsibilities
  • Proven experience as a procurement category manager or similar role with commodity experience
  • Solid knowledge of category management, strategic sourcing, marketing, and sales principle
  • Understanding of data analysis and forecasting methods
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Analytical and strategic thinking
  • Passionate about being in a growth-oriented organization and the ability and willingness to challenge the status quo to achieve new growth
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Capability in applied spend analytics, ERP and leading-edge Sourcing Tools, Processes and strategies
  • Capability in CRM tools
  • Excellent relationship management skills
  • Proven experience in sourcing relevant procurement agreements resulting in cost savings and ease of administration
  • Problem solving skills
