To identify, plan, and develop growth strategies and marketing of an Anatomic Pathology program on a system-wide basis in the community for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in conjunction with the Director, Vice President, Chairman, and Senior VP.

To manage the functions and services of Anatomic Pathology (Histology/Cytology/Autopsy) including the clerical AP support staff, on a systemwide basis in conjunction with the AP physician section heads to ensure a well-run and up to date operation.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages the activities of anatomic pathology employees under the guidance of the Director. Assesses competency of staff. Assumes responsibility in conjunction with Director, for scheduling, performance evaluations, coaching, disciplinary actions, transfers, promotions, terminations, salary adjustments, hiring and training of new employees.

  • Manages the extensive, expanding clerical aspect of the business including patient requests for second opinions, referring physician requests for second opinions, research and grant requests for patient materials, etc.

  • In conjunction with Department Chairman and Executive Director of DCLP, markets anatomic pathology services to potential clients, maintaining existing accounts, and creating relationships that generate profitable streams of revenue back to the AP Outreach activity.

  • Analyzes and effectively communicates client needs to the Chairman, Vice President, DCLP Executive Director, and technical team, and diplomatically deals with clients and physicians. Collaborates with the Department of Pathology Business Manager for Outreach Services, to provide seamless, effective service.

  • Acts as liaison with contracted physician group Executive Director to ensure consistency of coding and billing processes. Develops and completes audit process for pathology signoff and the review of technical charges.

  • In joint with Director and pathologists/cytopathologists, develops and maintains an active comprehensive Quality Assurance program encompassing all aspects of the services provided.

  • Oversees quality control program and ensures corrective action and documentation when necessary.

  • Ensures compliance with established productivity guidelines. Maintains other productivity monitoring systems.

  • Develops and maintains procedure manuals for all areas in conjunction with physician directors, supervisor, and technical staff.

  • Works closely with Anatomic Pathology LIS databasecoordinator to manage anatomic pathology database.

  • Maintains standards to meet all requirements of CAP, JCAHO, and other inspection and/or regulatory agencies.

  • In conjunction with physician section heads, Director, and supervisor of Histology, develops capital and operating budgets for Anatomic Pathology section.

  • Keeps informed of new administrative and technical aspects of respective areas by reviewing literature and attending regional and national meetings.

  • Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to the supervisor, in a timely fashion, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients or visitors.

  • Performs other related duties as directed.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • MBA or MS in health management preferred

  • B.S. degree in Biology, Cytology, Histotechnology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, or related field required

  • Five years’ experience as a cytotechnologist/ Histotechnician or pathology assistant, including three years in a leadership or supervisory role

  • ASCP certification or PA certification

  • Knowledge of Histology and Cytology procedures and theory, including infection control and quality assurance and performance improvement

  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations regarding the use of chemicals

  • Knowledge of management principles and techniques

  • Knowledge of crisis management techniques

  • Ability to drive process and work changes in a collaborative manner

  • Ability to instruct others in good laboratory techniques

  • Ability to prioritize competing demands for test completion

  • Ability to coordinate work schedules and staffing to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency

  • Ability to manage in a research as well as a clinical environment
