Position Summary


Responsible for the development of the business/sales relationship with potential clients and allies. Accountable to meet or exceed sales targets in a specific target market sector or sectors. The main focus of this role is to identify, understand, qualify, track, and prioritize pursuit opportunities, assemble pursuit teams, develop market strategies and lead McCarthy's pursuit process.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop annual business development plan for target market sectors, updating plan on a regular basis to reflect progress/market changes and working with senior management to implement plan
  • Understand strengths and vulnerabilities of major competitors and develop sales strategies to respond effectively
  • Establish initial contact with owners in potential customer organizations, identifying needs, expectations and project opportunities
  • Establish relationships within target market sectors to stay up-to-date on trends/opportunities, participating in trade shows and other client-related events
  • Record sales contacts and opportunities, project and company information for inclusion in marketing/proposal products
  • Collaborate with other groups in company to address business opportunities and overcome obstacles, participating in business development meetings to share best practices and conduct informal training
  • Ensure division leadership is aware of significant developments, sales forecasts and involved in appropriate activities, and that pursuit team is informed about significant developments and customer issues
  • Manage pipeline in market sectors to ensure opportunities are pursued timely and expectations are met, updating management system to track progress
  • Build relationships across multiple levels of accounts/constituents
  • Prepare for sales calls and respond to customer effects, setting objectives and resolving issues
  • Partner strategically with management relative to assigned market initiatives
  • Manage interview process and coach team to ensure McCarthy is positioned for success
  • Provide leadership in development of RFQ and RFP responses and presenting compelling value propositions to prospects/customers

Skills & Qualifications

  • 4-year degree and 10 years experience in construction industry
  • Specific experience in commercial construction industry within our core market sectors
  • Solid knowledge of construction delivery methods and construction process
  • Proven success in winning business within challenging markets
  • Ability to build and maintain trust-based relationships with existing clients
  • Strong relationships within and the ability to influence at the executive level within market sectors
  • Strong business acumen (financially and operationally)
  • Clear understanding of the design, construction and acquisition processes within target markets
  • Proactive and execution-oriented in approach to business development, with thorough knowledge of business development process
  • Demonstrated collaborative team leadership and team building characteristics
  • Excellent communication skills and a good listener
