Applicants are advised that relocation of our Washington, D.C. metropolitan area offices is in progress, from offices near the White House and in Herndon, Virginia, to Capitol Hill and Tysons, Virginia. Anticipated completion in summer 2019.

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 62,000 pilots at 33 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an experienced Benefits Specialist for our Herndon/Tysons, Virginia office. The Benefits Specialist works collaboratively with the Association's Lead Benefits Specialist, benefits attorneys, and other members of the Retirement & Insurance (R&I) Department in providing assistance to pilot governing bodies on all subjects that affect their employee benefits program(s). Under minimal supervision, s/he provides technical support on benefit issues to the R&I staff and pilot representatives; drafts and reviews summary plan descriptions for retirement and welfare plans; drafts and reviews benefit-related communications for MEC publications; assists in drafting the benefit portions of letters of agreement and collective bargaining agreements; reviews pilot benefit plans and policies for compliance with applicable legal requirements; prepares quarterly R&I newsletters for distribution; assists in the preparation of retirement, insurance, and welfare benefit proposals for negotiations; participates in the training of R&I pilot committee members by preparing and giving presentations at benefits training events and various R&I seminars; provides technical assistance to Labor Relations Counsels; may act as an in-house consultant on benefit-related matters; and, conducts ERISA and tax code research. The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of employee benefits, current trends and legislation, and will be expected to remain current in these areas.

Local, national travel, and international travel: –10-20%.

Minimum Requirements:

· Bachelor's degree in relevant area, e.g., Business, Human Resources, Pre-Law, or related field, from an accredited college or university is required; or, the equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Certification as an Employee Benefits Paralegal or Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) preferred but not required.

· Minimum three (3) years of experience as an ALPA Benefits Specialist or in a comparable position elsewhere, five (5) or more years of benefits-related experience strongly preferred. At management discretion, applicable experience may be substituted for some of the above requirements.

· Working knowledge of the design and operation of retirement and welfare benefits plans.

· Working knowledge of all laws applicable to retirement and welfare benefits (e.g., ERISA, ACA, FMLA, HIPAA, and Internal Revenue Code) required.

· Ability to interpret benefit laws, policies, and processes.

· Airline experience and/or experience working with collectively bargained plans preferred.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with MEC members, MEC committees, individual members, internal staff, and external contacts.

· Demonstrated ability working as an integral part of a team.

· PHR and/or SPHR certifications a plus.

· Software: Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook required.

Constantly operates a computer/smartphone/tablet. Regularly required to maintain a stationary position, move about the office and the local metropolitan area, determine what others have said or written, and converse with others and exchange accurate information.

Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the office and travel (locally, nationally, and internationally). Also includes occasional bending, stooping, squatting, and/or pushing and pulling or moving, e.g., to pack, unpack, and/or move cases.

Occasionally required to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, books, boxes, and files up to ten (10) pounds (lbs.). While on travel, could be responsible to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve luggage weighing as much as 50 lbs. (Assistance may not always be available.)
