The Opportunity


Ulteig is currently seeking talented and self-motivated candidates for an Airport Engineer position on our team to be based out of our Fargo or Bismarck, North Dakota offices, or our Detroit Lakes, Minnesota office. The successful candidate will possess solid interpersonal skills that give clients confidence that their interests are paramount while promoting a team culture within the company.


What You Will Do

The Airport Engineer will develop and maintain relationships with Ulteig's existing clients and assist with marketing efforts to acquire new clients. This individual will develop the budget and schedule for assigned airport projects and manage those projects effectively whether face to face or remotely. You need to skillfully negotiate with the FAA, and the Colorado Division of Aeronautics (or equivalent) to realize favorable results for the client. You will need to have 5-10 years of relevant experience in the aviation industry including a variety of landside and airside engineering projects including runways, taxiways, aprons, hangars, parking lots, circulation roadways, and NAVAID's. You must be proficient with AutoCAD Civil 3D and be able to prepare airport construction drawings and specifications. You should have experience in construction administration and observation or a willingness to learn these roles. The ability to lead the planning efforts for small terminal, other airport buildings, fuel systems, environmental studies, NAVAID's, and car rental facilities is a plus.

You will serve as a project manager and have full accountability for design and/or coordination with other departments, sub-consultants, clients, and regulatory agencies. You must be able to manage multiple concurrent projects which will require planning and scheduling the work, prioritizing tasks, and following through to confirm that tasks assigned to others are progressing as required. You must be able to guide an engineering project from an initial concept to final completion in an efficient manner with the resulting documents meeting all applicable requirements – both client and regulatory. On other engineering projects, you may serve in a support capacity by designing and drafting under the direction of another project manager.

The applicant shall be able to skillfully negotiate with the FAA, and the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission (or equivalent from another state) to realize favorable results for the client. The success of the Airport Engineer will be measured both by what they accomplish and what is achieved by others that they lead.


What We Expect from You

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, or related field is required
  • North Dakota and/or Minnesota PE license (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire) is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant aviation experience required
  • Extensive knowledge of FAA Advisory Circulars as they apply to engineering
  • Working relationship with FAA Great Lakes Region and NDAC officials preferred
  • Working knowledge of FAA AIP, PFC, and CFC funding mechanisms is preferred
  • Commercial and General Aviation airport experience preferred
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D is required
  • Experience with AviPLAN / PathPlanner / AeroTURN, ESRI/ArcGIS, is preferred
  • Experience Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Project) is highly desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience and/or relationships with aviation clients in North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, and/or South Dakota is a plus
  • Experience with Department of Defense projects is a plus
  • Experience developing scope and fees and preparing proposals is a plus
  • Should be willing to travel about 10% of the time during winter
  • Must be willing to provide continuous on-site construction administration/observation during the construction season
  • Must have authorization to work permanently in the US
