As an Automation Engineer, you will perform automation engineering activities to support production machinery with mechanical design solutions. Helps define problems, develop concepts and create designs for equipment and implement improvements. Works collaboratively with other automation engineers, process engineering and manufacturing. Manages outsourced vendors involved in design projects.

In this role, you will:

  • Problem resolution including:
    • Define Problems
    • Characterize problem bases on available data.
    • Identify potential solutions
    • Manage suppliers of components and subsystems
    • Preparation of design requirements for internal and external suppliers.
    • Prepares cost estimates
  • Design creation including:
    • Helps define manufacturing methods and workflows
    • Alternate methods
    • Concept selection
    • Specification of design elements
    • Greenfield designs
    • Adaptive upgrades of legacy designs
    • Complex mechanisms
    • Specialized materials
    • Manages external design resources as needed.
  • Implementation of design including:
    • Design in Solid Works 3D design software
    • Work from legacy designs in Autodesk 2 and 3D products
    • Produce detail & assembly drawings
    • Create bills of materials
    • Conduct design reviews with peers and customers
    • Lead design reviews with external suppliers and track results
    • Manage part procurement and kitting
    • Mentors junior design resources and other users of design software.
  • Design Transition
    • Participate in 1st build of new designs
    • Oversee multiple builds and installations
    • Provide supporting documentation to capture design intent
    • Coordinate designs with machine control engineers for seamless integration
    • Coordinate with process engineers to devise testing methods that validate designs
    • Maintain design history records.
    • Approves externally generated design drawing packages
    • Determines calibration / inspection requirements for components and systems and provides tools and methods.
  • Organizational
    • Manages outsourced vendors involved in design projects
    • Manages large-scale automation projects, planning activities with outside vendors to build final products
    • Engage and influence the CAD community within IDEXX
    • Coordinates the organization of data in EPDM
    • Represent the needs of automation design support.
    • Communicate CAD changes to the team
    • Maintains the design documentation segment of the standard machine specification.
    • Prioritize personal assignments and supporting resources
    • Collaborates with other departments in problem solving exercises
