SMBC is seeking an Audit Manager to work within the Internal Auditing Department's Financial Crimes Compliance team ("the FCC Audit Team") for the Americas function. It reports to a Director, and is responsible for the scoping and execution of Bank Secrecy Act and Anti-Money Laundering ("BSA/AML") audit coverage in accordance with established Internal Audit methodology and professional auditing standards.
In this position, the individual will supervise assigned audit staff members as they evaluate the BSA/AML control environment for business units operating within the Americas Division and provide feedback to Management on the adequacy of BSA/AML control designs, as well as the operating effectiveness of processes/activities. The candidate should have functional knowledge of local regulatory compliance and AML programs that have been established to comply with the BSA/AML and local banking regulatory requirements, policies and procedures, provisions and guidelines. The candidate must have working knowledge of regulatory requirements and the related risks and controls and demonstrate the ability to lead an FCC Audit Team on larger, more complex audit reviews, as well as work as a team member.
This position will not have any direct reports. However, as a VP Audit Manager, this person is a future candidate for a Senior Audit Manager position within the Department.
Number of indirect reports: When acting as the Auditor-in-Charge, the individual will be assigned an audit team (2 to 6 individuals) depending on the size and complexity of the audit.
Essential Functions of the Position:
The incumbent is responsible for performing the essential functions (the primary job duties that are fundamental to the position) below, in addition to other duties as assigned.
Up to 10% domestic/international travel during the fiscal year within SMBC's Americas Division, as follows:
Branches/ Subsidiaries located in Brazil, Canada, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Representative Offices located in Houston, Chicago, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru.
Examines and evaluate internal controls in key risk areas of banking activities/practices to ensure compliance with internal policies and applicable rules, laws, and regulations.
Possesses a broad and comprehensive understanding of different Internal Audit standards, policies and BSA/AML regulations. Proposes or evaluates appropriate corrective measure designed to strengthen internal controls, operational policies and procedures, and other weaknesses identified during audits
Delivers timely high quality BSA/AML audit assurance reports, Internal Audit Department and Regulatory issue validations and continuous monitoring reporting in accordance with InternalAudit Department standards, relevant government statutes and regulations.
Manages audit related activities for the SMBC Americas functional area at the regional or country level.
Conduct audit scoping, planning and closing meetings with Internal Audit and relevant Department Management.
Demonstrates strong judgment, political astuteness, and sensitivity to cultural diversity.
Possesses strong project management and interpersonal skills, makes sound decisions, exhibiting initiative and critical thinking.
Uses excellent communication skills in order to influence a wide range of internal audiences including respective product, function, or senior management partners.
Applies a broad and comprehensive knowledge of BSA/AML risks across functional areas and develops effective stakeholder relationships.
Proactively advances integrated auditing concepts and use of Computer Aided Audit Tools ("CAAT").
Propose or evaluate appropriate corrective measure designed to strengthen internal controls, operational policies and procedures, and other weaknesses identified during audits. Analyzes reportingfindings and recommends and pragmatic solutions for risk and control problems.
Prepares clear and concise audit work papers and audit reports summarizing scope, methodology, and significant conclusions of audit procedures performed within prescribed timeframes.
Minimum 8 years of audit experience in areas related to BSA/AML programs and regulations, banking regulations, local standards, and internal policies.
Subject matter expertise of BSA/AML related risks and a solid business understanding of financial services industry, especially those associated with correspondent banking, corporate banking, treasury management and capital markets conducting BSA/AML reviews.
Demonstrates experience in managing integrated internal audit and assurance delivery.
Effective influence skills in communicating findings. This individual must be an articulate and effective communicator, both verbally and in writing.
Strong interpersonal skills for interfacing with all levels of internal and external audit and management.
Preferred Education/Licenses/Professional Certifications/Registrations:
Bachelor's Degree in relevant discipline (e.g., Accounting, Finance or other related field)
CAMS certification is required. CIA and/or CPA are a plus
