Why does the job exist?

This position will provide legal advice to the New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) and staff members on various matters including contract issues, personnel matters, internal affairs, state, federal and administrative employment defense, policy review, and legislative analysis. Further legal representation includes agency IPRA responses and review of Judgment and Sentences, and agency defense in pro-se inmate civil law cases as well as litigation management and settlement negotiations. The position will assist as necessary with general attorney duties such as contract review, subpoenas, policies and procedures and other administrative tasks as assigned.

How does it get done?

* Building relationships with staff to effectuate the location and gathering of responsive documents
* Review responsive documents to determine whether they are public or are not subject to inspection and copying under one or more of IPRA's exceptions or exemptions
* Research and draft responses to requests outlining what is being produced and the case law and statutory reasons for requests items which being denied.

Ideal Candidate

Experience in the following:
* Legal experience
* Working with IPRA requests
* Litigation

Minimum Qualification

Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a Driver's License. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an adult prison environment, which may include daily contact with inmates. Willingness to work in a correctional facility, may be required to work odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
