Departmental Overview

University Health Services (UHS) serves the campus as a comprehensive campus-based health center providing fully accredited medical care, mental health services, and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty and staff. We coordinate off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals and also administer a major medical insurance plan for students. In addition, UHS serves the campus through public health, health justice, and health policy initiatives. Learn more by visiting the UHS website , our strategic plan , and our UHS values .

The UC Berkeley Sports Medicine Program is administered through UHS. This key campus program provides comprehensive primary and specialty medical services and access to other important programs for Division I NCAA Intercollegiate Athletes.

Responsibilities

Direct Clinical Care Intercollegiate Athletics
  • Provide comprehensive sports medicine evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and injuries for UC Berkeley students and intercollegiate athletes in sports medicine settings.
  • Provide consultation to physicians, psychologists, physical therapists, trainers, other sports medicine personnel, coaches and administrators as appropriate
  • Maintain complete medical records on student athletes, including records of pre-participation clearance, care of any illnesses or injuries sustained, results of medical referrals or diagnostic testing, and any follow-up care occurring on or off campus
  • Under the guidance of the Head Team Physician, serve as a recognized authority to independently direct medical care and make final treatment decisions for student-athletes, including making decisions regarding return to participation, and setting appropriate activity limits in student-athletes returning to partial participation.
  • Participate in providing physician coverage for sports medicine clinics, training rooms, practices, events, pre-participation physicals, etc., as assigned.
  • Maintain or delegate responsibility for case management, continuity, and coordination of care in complex cases
  • Work effectively with insurance and referral coordinator staff to manage financial considerations of patient referrals and case management across all insurance types, as well as the timely acquisition of specialty consultation, advanced imaging, and other ancillary diagnostic or therapeutic interventions as necessary in the care of student-athlete injuries and illnesses
  • Responsible for following generally accepted principles of good medical practice and notifying the HTP or Medical Director when deviations are observed in areas such as quality of care, appropriate resource utilization, communication or professionalism, risk management, etc.
  • Serves as designated team physician for assigned sports, e.g. basketball, soccer, etc.
    • Serves as key liaison for community referral physicians for assigned team.
    • Provides leadership role for all members of Sports Medicine treatment and rehabilitation team for assigned sports.
    • Provides event coverage as assigned, either by covering events personally or by arranging for volunteer coverage. Event coverage includes evaluation and appropriate management of ill or injured athletes before, during and after the game. Travel with team when assigned.
    • Provides medical care for athletes in the UHS Sports Medicine Clinic and/or in the Training Quarters.
    • Coordinates management and rehabilitation of illnesses and injuries with athletic trainer, physical therapist, and other staff.
    • Communicates with coaching staff when appropriate, especially regarding return to play issues.
    • Communicates with parents when appropriate, with the student athlete's permission.
Provide Direct Clinical Care University Health Services Clinics
  • Provide comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and injuries for UC Berkeley students in areas of urgent care, primary care, and/or student health sports medicine specialty clinic.
  • Maintain complete medical records on patients, including any care of any illnesses or injuries, results of medical referrals or diagnostic testing, and any follow-up care occurring on or off campus.
  • Responsible for following generally accepted principles of good medical practice and notifying the Medical Director or designee when deviations are observed in areas such as quality of care, appropriate resource utilization, communication or professionalism, risk management, etc.
Administrative Tasks
  • Contribute to the creation and execution of policies and procedures to maintain the highest quality of medical care, minimize risk, and support optimal health and development of student- athletes.
  • In collaboration with the Head Team Physician, develop and implement improved screening, prevention, and performance enhancement programs
  • Assist in the administration, storage, management, and procurement of prescription and over-the-counter medications used by student athlete
  • Participate in the training of Sports Medicine Fellows and other physician trainees, providing direct and indirect supervision, as well as continuous education and monitoring of clinical services provided by physician trainees
  • Provide medical consultation for drug testing procedures in accordance with approved policies and procedures set forth by regulatory agencies such as the NCAA, ACC conference, etc.

Required Qualifications

Education
  • MD, or recognized equivalent.
  • Fellowship training in Primary Care Sports Medicine (strongly preferred), or demonstration of equivalent broad-based experience
Licenses/Certifications
  • Current unrestricted active California Medical License
  • Board-certification in American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Primary Care specialty (strongly preferred), OR Board certification in other ABMS specialty with appropriate primary care training/experience.
  • Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) for sports medicine, or eligible to sit for the CAQ exam
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Certificate listing UHS address
  • Current CURES Registration
  • Current AHA-approved BLS training/card
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Requires knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of specialist-level physician duties as well as effective organizational and management skills
  • Expert clinical skills in the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of commonly acquired athletic injuries and common medical conditions and illnesses seen in the collegiate athlete and general student population.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with student-athletes, sports medicine staff, coaches, administrators, and parents as appropriate.
  • Must have effective diagnostic and decision making skills in areas of primary care, urgent care, and primary care sports medicine. Must be able to precisely diagnose patient conditions and make appropriate treatment recommendations.
  • Must be able to continuously negotiate and problem solve and provide consistently superior levels of accessibility, communication, and professionalism. Must be able to influence and effectively collaborate with specialty physicians and healthcare providers at all levels
  • Must be computer literate and have the ability to learn new electronic medical record and practice management systems. Requires knowledge of electronic/medical records systems and ability to maintain accurate clinical records
  • Ability to work effectively and sensitively work with staff and patients from diverse ethnic/racial, educational levels, sexual orientations, and identities
  • Must be able to instill, model, and market the highest level of customer-service attributes to varying constituent bases simultaneously.
  • Must stay abreast of new medical knowledge; maintain and increase expertise and skills as relevant to clinical practice in a college health setting.
  • Must maintain standards of professional conduct as published by AMA/CMA.
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the Pacific-12 Conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in conducting and publishing research preferred
  • Teaching experience with learners at the athletic trainer, medical school, residency or fellowship levels preferred
  • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Training and Experience strongly preferred
  • Regenerative Medicine Experience strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of Sports Medicine experience practice preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of college-level coverage experience preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years practice of outpatient primary care medicine.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
  • The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $245,000 through $295,000.
  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
