JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Senior Director of Facilities, the Associate Director/Director, EHS will manage all Sangamo Therapeutics' Environmental Health and Safety programs and related activities. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the Company is compliant with all regulatory requirements and industry best practices, to that end s/he and will take ownership of all existing EHS programs and policies and will review, develop, and improve upon these to maximize effectiveness and compliance. S/he will be responsible for managing all aspects of the EHS function and will work with consultants and partner with colleagues to ensure successful outcomes.

As this position has dual-site responsibilities, the successful candidate will be required to split time between Sangamo's new headquarters in Brisbane, CA and our R&D center in Richmond, CA. The HQ includes a manufacturing facility and labs and therefore the successful applicant will ideally have experience supporting GMP gene therapy/cell therapy manufacturing operations in addition to R&D and office.

This position requires a person with strong customer-service instincts; outgoing, enthusiastic, professional, and collaborative.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Cal OSHA Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Bloodborne Pathogens, Laboratory Standard (Chemical Hygiene Programs), Ergonomics, Hazard Communication Standard, Lock Out\Tag Out, Confined Space Entry, Electrical Safety, Contractor Safety, Radiation safety, etc., harmonizing these across sites;
  • Hazardous waste management – DTSC (BOE reporting), HMBPs with CUPAs for required collections, storage, disposal of hazardous wastes;
  • Hazardous materials management – coordination with local fire departments;
  • All Health and Safety training and new hire orientation;
  • Emergency preparedness and response;
  • Environmental Permits – BAAQMD, Cal-EPA, wastewater, SPCC;
  • Industrial Hygiene program management – experience in workplace monitoring;
  • Monitors, evaluates and provides guidance on compliance with emerging issues in biological research, including training laboratory workers
  • Promote and drive the formation of a new Institutional Biological and Recombinant DNA Safety Committee (IBC), and provide support, attending meetings and providing input as needed. The IBC reviews the safety and security of research at Sangamo as required by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to oversee biological research involving recombinant DNA
  • Work with QA to develop Safety Data Sheets for Sangamo Products
  • Schedule and coordinate evacuation drills
  • Conduct incident investigations (incorporating root cause analysis)
  • Acquire and keep current all necessary permits and licenses
  • Audit/inspect work areas regularly– manufacturing, labs, offices, and support areas
  • Chair of Health and Safety Committee and sub-committees
  • Promote a culture of prioritizing health and safety throughout the organization
  • On call 24/7 for emergency response

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline, Master's preferred
  • Certified Biosafety Professional (CBSP) or Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) certification preferred
  • A minimum of 10 years' EHS experience in the biotechnology/pharma industry, with at least 5 years in a position at, or near, this level of seniority
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all Local, State, and Federal regulations pertinent to biotechnology laboratory and manufacturing facilities in the Bay Area
  • Thorough knowledge of safety and environmental regulations, codes, and standards, including Cal\Fed-OSHA, Cal\Fed-EPA, DOT, NIOSH, NIH, CDC, FDA, ATF, FWS, Homeland Security and other regulatory requirements applicable to cGMP and non-GMP environments
  • Experience in conducting HAZOPs, Risk Assessments and Job Hazards Analysis/Assessments for chemicals, biologicals and manufacturing operations process safety
  • Ability to develop new and/or maintain and revise existing EHS programs and policies
  • Highly developed communication skills – written and verbal, and comfortable conducting training for individuals, as well as small to large groups
  • Ability to promote EHS initiatives within the organization with enthusiasm and via excellent communication (written and verbal), presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to proactively engage with stakeholders to understand and anticipate change, address concerns, and provide solutions
  • Highly collaborative, outgoing, and friendly – capable of influencing senior management and uniting peers and customers from all functional areas in driving EHS priorities forward
