The Division of Advancement's mission is to inspire and cultivate meaningful engagement and philanthropic support to advance York University's excellence in education, research and community service. In support of this mission, the Associate Director, Alumni Communications is responsible for providing strategic alumni communications leadership and vision for the Division of Advancement and York University. The Associate Director will report directly to the Executive Director, Alumni Engagement, with an indirect report to the Chief Communications & Marketing Officer in the Office of Communications and Public Affairs to enable strategic, University-wide collaboration and strategy development and ensure units are aligned and integrated. The incumbent is responsible for identifying, developing and implementing alumni communication initiatives in support of divisional priorities including an annual pan-University alumni strategic communications plan and managing the implementation of a comprehensive supporting suite of tactics, activities and collateral materials that meaningfully engage York's 300,000+ alumni, by encouraging dialogue, inspiring alumni to become donors, volunteers and ambassadors. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that alumni communications are aligned and support both the University's and Advancement's goals and objectives and are developed and executed in collaboration with campus stakeholders including the President's Office, Communications & Public Affairs, Faculties and Colleges.
University Degree with emphasis on Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Social Sciences or similar field. York degree preferred. APR accreditation an asset.
At least seven years recent experience in journalism, communications or post-secondary education with a focus on communications. Demonstrated experience in collaborative leadership across a complex environment is essential. Prior experience coaching and mentoring teams. Experience in project management and managing large, multi-faceted initiatives. Experience in stakeholder relations. Experience in developing and managing communications materials for alumni using a variety of media, including print, digital and social media. Highly developed political sensitivity. Knowledge of protocol. Knowledge of privacy and security legislation such as FIPPA, PCI Data Security Standards, procurement and contracts, Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). Familiarity with Employment Standards. Health and Safety policies and risk management. Knowledge of French would be an asset. Experience in a unionized environment an asset.
Exceptional writing skills and copy editing skills including grammar, punctuation and composition. superior presentation skills. Demonstrated creativty in both writing and approach to alumni communications. S/he will also have demonstrated management skills including planning, human resources management, budgeting, and quality control. Demonstrated ability to engage appropriate stakeholders in communications development and deployment process; understanding strategies to enhance alumni relations and fundraising; strong project management skills. ability to manage and motivate staff and volunteers to provide high-quality and engaging communications materials; proven ability to work with diverse groups of people and to inspire an energetic, cooperative and vision-oriented working environment; superior tact and diplomacy; proven ability to exercise good judgment and initiative; demonstrated creativity and resourcefulness; demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality on a continuous basis. ability to work under pressure of high volume and respond effectively to changing priorities; strong computing skills, including word processing, database management, and computerized spreadsheets.
General office environment. Physical demands include interactive keyboarding skills (approximately 50%). Sensory demands include a higher than usual level of listening and concentration required when reviewing all communication products for accuracy, spelling, grammar, sentence structure. Position includes travel and attending events locally.
