The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry Office of Equity & Inclusion (SMD-OEI) seeks an accomplished clinician leader to serve as the Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion (EI). The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise and vision in promoting and advancing EDI for Faculty, learners, and an outstanding academic career at a major academic medical institution.
The Associate Dean will report to the Senior Associate Dean for Equity & Inclusion in the School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) with a dotted line report to the Vice President for Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer of the University of Rochester in executing the overall University's EDI Strategic Plan inclusive with the SMD EDI strategic plan priorities and goals. Through an intersectional lens, the Associate Dean will provide leadership, coordination, consultation, assistance, strategic oversight, vision, and direction in support of the University of Rochester's five institutional goals and priorities to build an equitable, diverse, and inclusive learning and work environment for all members of its community.
The Associate Dean for E&I will advise the SMD Sr. Associate Dean and senior leadership for SMD to lead the strategic EDI efforts that advance the SMD's mission and vision. Responsible for collaborating with key University and Medical Center constituencies to develop and carry out EDI initiatives that contribute to the university-wide Equity & Inclusion Strategic Plan, the SMD Equity and Anti-racism Action Plan, contribute to the recruitment, retention, and career goals of underrepresented Faculty, trainees, postdoctoral fellows, and other staff and learners (medical and graduate students), and support the overarching goals of the SMD faculty, trainees, students, and academic leaders to enhance the SMD programs for health equity. The Associate Dean will participate in the SMD Diversity Council to coordinate EDI initiatives across the Clinical and Basic Science Departments.
In this new role, the successful Associate Dean will be an impetus for change and passionate about infusing values around EDI, climate, and culture into all programs and activities. The Associate Dean must work in dynamic ways within a sophisticated, complex, and diverse environment. The position is a highly specialized, hands-on position dedicated to growing awareness and improving students, staff, and faculty capacities to address EDI issues and align the strategic initiatives with the Office of Equity and Inclusion.
The Associate Dean is responsible for collaborating and aligning strategies with the University of Rochester's Office of Equity & Inclusion under Dr. Mercedes Ramírez Fernández, the Vice President of Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer.
To interface successfully with Faculty, staff, trainees, and programs, the candidate should have doctoral-level training as a clinician and experience with patient care in academic and/or other organizations. The Associate Dean will hold a primary faculty appointment in a clinical department, with the department and rank to be commensurate with area of expertise and experience. The Associate Dean role will comprise approximately 75 % FTE, with the potential for additional effort (up to a full-time position) to comprise clinical, teaching, scholarship, and/or other duties individually negotiated with the primary department. The candidate must qualify for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
