Job Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Operations Manager, Project Manager or designate, the Assistant Project Manager oversees management and execution of construction projects including executing plans, meeting with customers, organizing, budgeting, and cost reporting. Assists in meeting project requirements and controlling costs by coordinating and effectively utilizing all of the resources needed on each project, ensures project goals and objectives are accomplished on schedule and within budget, and that quality and safety standards are met. Supervises assigned staff and administers company policies, procedures and health and safety programs.

Primary/Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists in assessing scope of work and resources required to successfully complete the project.

  2. Assists in verifying estimates based on detailed review of proposal specifications.

  3. Supervises and coordinates on-site project activities and provides day to day direction of on-site staff. Ensures that the project is executed in accordance with designs, budgets and schedules; takes appropriate action to minimize the impact of deviations.

  4. Resolves problems that may arise during project execution, escalation complex issues to project manager for approval.

  5. Monitors the efficient use of materials and equipment and the contractual performance of the project; works with project staff to ensure that assigned duties and responsibility are performed per agreed upon expectations.

  6. Ensures that quality, productivity and safety standards are met.

  7. Attends project and customer meetings and ensures that action items and decisions are documented appropriately for the parties and the project file.

  8. Administers financial tracking systems to monitor project costs and estimates.

  9. Performs other related administrative or project based duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in a related field of study such as Civil Engineering, Construction Management or Project Management. PEng designation or equivalent is preferred.

  • 5 to 7 years of recent related project management experience in a heavy civil construction environment.

  • Demonstrated experience applying knowledge of project accounting, project controls (cost, schedule, change management, etc.), material management, contract management, subcontract management, safety, and quality

  • Supervisory experience providing direction to project crews, administering company employment and safety policies and programs.

Talents and Abilities:

  • Ability to apply, interpret and understand contract law and language

  • Proficiency utilizing common business and construction applications such as Microsoft Office products, Hard Dollar or JD Edwards software.

  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and abilities; applies innovative and effective management techniques to maximize employee performance.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills.

  • Strong client relations, influencing skills and organizational skills.

Physical/Travel/Attendance Requirements

  • Significant overnight travel to job sites is required.

  • Exposure to outdoor construction sites in all weather conditions.

  • Work is in and around live track (trains).
