Job Summary:

The Assistant Director of Communications is responsible for assisting with the promotion of the USC Gould School of Law to key audiences that include prospective students, alumni, donors, legal professionals and internal university colleagues. The Assistant Director is responsible for supporting the development of materials and content for key communication vehicles including an alumni magazine, newsletters, brochures, web, press releases, videos, social media, marketing initiatives and Dean's remarks/presentations. Activities include writing, editing, and proofreading marketing and communications print materials, as well as creating and posting digital content for the website and social media sites. Provides support with ensuring consistent and appropriate use of brand identity and logos. Reports to the Director of Strategic Communications and works closely with media relations, as well as with faculty and staff, to showcase and promote USC Gould, and the delivery of the School's communication and messaging strategy.

Specific Responsibilities:

Print Publications and Collateral Material:

  • Develops/writes original content and updates/edits existing content for USC Gould print publications, including articles for the USC Law magazine and various newsletters; content for brochures, invitations, marketing initiatives and programs; identifies and interviews appropriate faculty, students, alumni and staff as subjects for communication pieces
  • Oversees planning, development and production of bi-annual alumni magazine; plans story list and develops publication timeline; identifies and assigns artwork and writing needs; coordinates with vendors throughout the project including designers, printers, photographers and mail house; oversees project management to meet timeline and budget
  • Writes press releases and stories promoting USC Gould faculty, news and events for website, as well as distribution through University's central media relations group
  • Advises on appropriate use of logos, emblems and indicia. Reviews and provides direction to ensure compliance with the University graphic identity standards;
  • Tracks effectiveness of communication materials; assists with determining metrics and analyzing results

Web/Online/Social Media Communications:

  • Identifies content, writes, edits and formats online announcements, stories and event coverage for USC Gould website and social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.); monitors, maintains and updates content, videos and photos; advises on campaigns and activities to engage key audiences
  • Assists with navigational enhancements, content organization and other website enhancements; ensures consistency, quality and unified voice across the website
  • Develops and edits content for other electronic communications (i.e. including e-mail messages and e-mail campaigns); builds and distributes electronic communications
  • Works closely with IT staff to gather web analytics for assessing social media and web activities

Executive and Internal Communications:

  • Develops, writes, and edits speeches/remarks, letters, web communications and presentations for the Dean (for internal and external audiences)
  • Writes internal e-mail announcements to highlight events/achievements involving or of-interest to students, faculty and staff

Additional responsibilities:

  • Provides back-up proofreading and production assistance
  • Provide or coordinate photography support at law school events and for faculty, staff, students and alumni
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned

Candidates should have:

  • Experience working in social media and web; web content writing experience; familiarity with content management systems
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office – Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent judgment as well as interpersonal, negotiation, organizational skills
  • Ability to work with individuals at all levels in the organization
  • High attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in marketing, journalism, communication, English, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years' professional writing and editing experience, including writing long-format feature stories and newsletter articles, promotional brochure copy, and online content; strong proofreading and editing skills
  • Experience working in Adobe Creative Cloud applications, video editing and web content management systems
  • Knowledge of multiple web browser and navigation standards
  • Social media content and campaign development experience; experience posting on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Flickr, LinkedIn and other major social media sites; utilize web analytics to assess effectiveness and identify areas of improvement
  • Experience maintaining graphic identity guidelines; experience with creative development of materials
  • Experience in project management, maintaining budgets and meeting timelines; experience managing and directing freelancers and vendors
  • Experience with tracking and evaluation of campaigns and marketing programs
  • Experience in both external and internal communications
  • Experience in higher education and working with faculty.
