POSITION SUMMARY:

The ideal candidate for the Assistant Controller role is highly motivated, results oriented and excited to grow with a dynamic and innovative organization transforming healthcare delivery to benefit patients and communities. The Assistant Controller is a director-level key financial partner for the organization with responsibility for owning the quality of organization-wide financial information used in internal and external financial reporting. The Assistant Controller leads a central accounting team, responsible for general ledger accounting, revenue recognition, treasury, disbursements, technical accounting, financial statement audit preparation and process, and JV accounting and reporting. The Assistant Controller will work beside the Controller, Director of Tax, Director of Disbursements, Regional (operations-focused) Controllers, and the Director of Internal Controls.

The Assistant Controller will also partner with other central support service teams such as people support, legal, and revenue cycle to provide the financial insights necessary to drive operational and financial results in a consolidated basis. This role involves oversight of the general ledger system and is focused on continuous process improvement toward automation efficiency and accuracy.

Successful candidates will have experience as a controller or assistant controller of a $500 million to >$1 billion stand-alone entity, or similar-sized reporting unit within a larger organization. A strong technical accounting background, proven track record leading teams and polished interpersonal skills for interaction with all levels of an organization are keys to success in this position. The right candidate will be proactive in partnering with the organization to drive a spirit of continuous improvement with an opportunity to make a significant positive impact on organization processes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own the preparation of and integrity of consolidated financial data
  • Partner with other back office service teams to provide financial and business insight
  • Participation as the lead contact with external audit, valuation and actuarial firms
  • Provide leadership to accounting staff in meeting team goals
  • Manage the overall month-end close process
  • Drive preparation of quarterly financial information and debt compliance certificates
  • Ensure appropriate processes are in place to deliver high integrity financials, such as organizing transaction-level data, analyzing the information, and making bridging accruals
  • Complete payroll analysis, accruals, and tie-outs and/or manage others who complete
  • Read, understand, and apply detailed contract language related to joint ventures, debt agreements, and purchase accounting transactions
  • Prepare, review, and reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly and manage the account reconciliation process across the accounting team
  • Analyze and understand monthly variances and support regional reporting needs
  • Oversee daily cash flow alongside Treasury and Disbursement teams and provide summarized reporting to executives
  • Identify opportunities to improve process, work flow and insight to increase productivity, team effectiveness and organizational insights
  • Lead, develop and support a world class accounting staff in support of a patient-centric mission
  • Participate in cross-functional teams and ad hoc projects as assigned
  • Ensure compliance with a strong controls environment

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND TRAINING NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS JOB:

  • Analytical background with experience in progressive accounting and finance roles
  • Experience with Intacct or other ERP systems
  • System-oriented ability to automate and create process efficiencies
  • Financial statement preparation
  • Technical GAAP understanding with ability to research applicable GAAP guidance
  • Advanced Excel skills
