Job ResponsibilitiesThe job of a State Grand Jury Attorney is a unique prosecution position. State Grand Jury prosecutors work closely with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and other state, local, and federal partners to develop complex investigations into such subjects as cartel drug trafficking, public corruption, complex white-collar matters, and gang violence. State Grand Jury prosecutors use the power of the State Grand Jury to compel witnesses to testify and to subpoena different types of evidence to develop these complex investigations before indictment. Once a case is indicted by the State Grand Jury, a prosecutor in the division is then responsible for resolving the cases from his or her investigation in general sessions court, whether by plea or jury trial. The job of a State Grand Jury prosecutor is also unique in that no cases automatically come to the State Grand Jury - prosecutors have autonomy in identifying criminal problems in the State that need to be fought and then developing cases before the State Grand Jury to do so.
