The Area Logistics Manager (ALM) position is responsible for managing private fleet, outsourced transportation fleets and courier networks (in-market) across multiple business units within AAP.  The ALM is responsible for all aspects of planning, monitoring, executing and analyzing freight operations, planning tools, compliance and standard operating procedures.  The ALM will be accountable for developing innovative logistics solutions, supporting company growth initiatives and meeting or exceeding organizational goals within the regional structure.  

This position will support the regional Director strategically and tactically in responding to key marketplace developments, trends, opportunities or threats as well as proactively addressing key customer initiatives. The ALM makes decisions that promote synergies in the AAP supply chain network while maximizing the performance, cost metrics and safety of the department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • P&L accountability up to $35MM with multi-site accountability.  Assist in developing and managing the operating budget for logistics costs equaling approximately $225MM annually. 

  • Will supervise 3PL and/or up to 40 private fleet union and/or non-union drivers remotely utilizing lead drivers and the support of DC and Store Leadership.

  • Safety/Security/Compliance: Ensures Sarbanes-Oxley compliance; ensures that DOT requirements are adhered to, handles escalated issues, and safeguards against hazardous materials.  Serves as Safety Champion within the Area striving for best in class status while meeting or exceeding Safety performance metrics.

  • Provide guidance on DOT compliance, Customs and Trading Partners Against Terrorism (CTPAT) compliance, internal policies, and industry requirements.

     Carrier/Fleet Network Management: Responsible for onsite 3rd party management team and overall results.  Provides contract negotiations support (SME, analytics), carrier compliance and claims.  Assists with RFPs, equipment management, leverages fixed assets, resource allocations, Fleet MS/TMS, metrics/KPIs, contingency planning.

  •  Generation of third party revenue via backhaul opportunities and assist in conversion of inbound suppliers to collect.

  •  Business Partner to GMs and RVPs: Serves as subject matter expert; designs and implements customer solutions.

  •  Identify and analyze rates, operating costs, and revenues to establish continuous improvement designed to increase efficiencies, revenues and lower costs.

  •  Implement business plans to support overall organizational strategy.

  • Serve as primary contact within area for internal/external business inquiries and/or issues concerning vendor and/or carrier partners.

  • Collaborate with and support internal/external partners, customers, carriers, vendors to ensure acceptable performance and service levels are being executed.

  • Develop and communicate Inbound or Outbound Transportation standard operating procedures, policies, goals and objectives. 

  • Supervises, develops and coaches direct reports in the performance of their duties and alignment of their work to organizational goals.

  • Conduct analysis of activities, costs, operations and forecast data to determine area progress toward goals and objectives.

  • Tactical Execution of Key Initiatives: Projects, Strategic Initiatives (HPTs), change management, analytics, project management; identifies and executes business/supply chain opportunities.

    Must be a Team Player with exceptional interpersonal skills and coaching abilities.

    Ability to manage and direct private fleet drivers and 3rd Party Dedicated carriers remotely.

    Functional knowledge of all modes of transportation including fleet (private and 3PL), parcel, LTL, TL, courier / pool distribution, etc.

    Critical thinking, organization and interpersonal communication skills.  Ability to communicate and persuade at management level.  Ability to effectively communicate to all stakeholders, including cross-functional business partners and to all levels within the organization. 

    In depth knowledge of transportation and supply chain software: TMS, ERP, FMS systems.

    Ability to review and interpret financial models as they relate to budgets and strategic planning.

    Solid understanding of regulatory issues (DOT compliance, hazmat, etc.). Experience managing DOT, Hazmat, CTPAT, and/or customs compliance.


    Bachelor's degree in Business, Logistics, or another related area; and 5-7 years Transportationexperience with at least 3 years of either Inbound or Outbound Transportationexperience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


    This position will indirectly supervise local facilities’ transportation teams with support of DC and Store Leadership and may directly supervise a Logistic Manager.
