Job Description

The ASP Group (Argonne Special Projects) of the Material Science Division, seeks an outstanding early-(RD2) or mid-career (RD3) Experimental Researcher to fill an open scientific staff position within the group. ASP performs research in novel detection capabilities that focus on analyte detection in harsh, complicated, and complex environments. The researcher can be expected to travel to field environments to test and evaluate new technologies created within the group, work with external groups to accomplish project tasks and technology transition, and conduct support work in the laboratory.

Position Requirements
  • MS or PhD in applied physics, radiation physics, or nuclear engineering
  • Has experience with radiation detection, signal processing and time sequence correlations. Experience with gamma spectroscopy and neutron activation is desirable.
  • Has Python programming experience
  • Is familiar with Linux-based (specifically Raspberry PI) platforms
  • Familiarity with data analysis and statistical methods is desired
  • Must be willing to travel to support field efforts
  • Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills, and has the ability to contribute to written technical reports and presentations
  • Has the ability to work independently and as part of a team and the ability to interact well with external collaborators.
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Has knowledge and experience with scientific software development
  • Possesses outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Has knowledge and experience with software and hardware revision control and tracking techniques
  • A strong mechanical proficiency is advantageous
  • CAD experience is advantageous
  • Experience using the R platform is advantageous
  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen who can obtain a Q clearance
  • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

RD2: Bachelors and 5+ years or Masters and 3+ years or a PhD, or equivalent

RD3: Bachelors and 8+ years or Masters and 5+ years or a PhD and 3+ years, or equivalent
