Our client is a leading flavor company based in Chicago! The company provides flavor solutions for dairy, confectionery, healthcare, beverage, grain, and savory markets. We have been retained to find a talented Applications Technologist!

The Applications Technologist assists with the selection and screens flavors to meet customer expectations, assists in prototype formulation, produces prototypes at benchtop for flavor application testing, and conducts pilot scale processing of prototypes. This position contributes to building strong customer relationships through project interaction and participation in customer activities. This position will be focused on dairy applications.

With some direction, the Applications Technologist will manage customer projects and interactions, formulate product bases and prototypes independently, and participate in internal innovation and improvement projects, in preparation for roles with greater responsibility and leadership.

This position provides essential support that enables the Business Unit to fulfill customer needs in a timely manner. Due to the high volume of requests and customer centric culture, this position requires urgency, flexibility, and responsiveness. With guidance, the role affords the opportunity as Project leader to work with cross-functional partners like Sales, Flavor Chemists, Regulatory, Supply Chain, Production, Marketing and Research & Innovation to solve challenges, successfully execute customer projects, and gain continual learning opportunities for personal and professional growth.


  • Completes project with ongoing guidance and input from the Scientist/ Manager
  • Follow internal practices and procedures to deliver high quality samples in required time frame
  • Modify application prototypes and flavor systems based on customer feedback
  • Assist in pilot scale processing of various finished products to assess flavor performance
  • Perform product analysis and testing
  • Ensure flavors/products are in compliance with all regulations and certifications
  • Develop flavor solutions for customers that meet cost and performance expectations
  • Understand possible interactions between base ingredients, including flavors
  • Build knowledge on new ingredients, technologies and segments as they are identified
  • Properly documents activities, conclusions and recommendations in lab notebook
  • Maintain documentation of all submission formulations in the formula management system, for a reliable history of customer activity & support
  • Participate in formal and informal sensory panels in support of customer projects
  • Engage in industry events and professional organizations relevant to the market segments of responsibility or flavor industry


  • BS Degree in Food Science or a related field
  • One - three years of R&D experience with dairy products
  • Strong sense of urgency
  • Ability to collaborate and build constructive working relationships across the organization
  • Strong analytical skills to discern/diagnose trends and issues and to troubleshoot and solve challenges
  • Software proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Formula Management system
