Job Summary

  • Be the champion to support our IFW efforts for working safely and building a culture of caring within the organization that reinforces the behavioral aspects of working and living safely.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Communicate and demonstrate support of the Company initiatives, objectives and plans.
  • Attract and retain premier talent through recruiting, mentoring, training and other employee development activities
  • Responsible for providing a balance of support, guidance, empowerment and accountability of the Discipline staff.
  • Ensure design employees or team meets task schedules, produce quality deliverables, and respect project budgets and earned value projections.
  • Pro-actively raise and address inter-disciplinary or intra-disciplinary issues with Discipline Directors.
  • Serve as staff manager for Design Managers.
  • Identify, develop and mentor Design Managers for continuous growth and improved skill set; especially those whose career path includes Project Management beyond Design.
  • Provide developmental support for aspiring Design Managers to produce future Design Managers and Project Managers for the Company.
  • Establish and maintain a succession strategy for key positions including the Director of the discipline
  • Coordinate with proposal development; ensure proper delivery resources are identified and engaged in proposal preparation.
  • Coordinate with Project Controls, Estimating, Construction, Procurement and other business entities as appropriate to align services and execution strategies for design projects.
  • Drive the culture of cross-functional engagement within the Company to improve overall project delivery, profitability and client satisfaction.
  • Provide active oversight of design-project performance, forecasting and all aspects of effective project management on the active portfolio. Provide active guidance to support PM’s in achieving successful project delivery.
  • Cooperate with and support Project Management in achieving contracted deliverables and target profitability margins on projects.
  • Accountable for continuous improvement of Design Management tools and training materials.
  • As available, serve as an active Design Manager. (This is likely to be low initially, increasing to a target utilization of 50% after an initial 6 month period)
  • On occasion, play the role of program director, project manager and/or client manager for identified projects.
  • Encourage and promote an atmosphere of collaboration, creativity, ingenuity, progress, efficiency, and enthusiasm within the discipline and project teams, including contributing to professional association workgroups, industry forums, and technical seminars and conferences.
  • Maintain strong collaboration within the Discipline, with other Discipline Directors and with Senior Management through formal Discipline group meetings, Discipline Director Meetings, monthly all hands Discipline group meetings, Bi-Weekly Design Operations meetings, and additional informal meetings as required.
  • Regular reporting to the Director of Design Operations on the state of the discipline including, but not limited to:
    • Progress and tactics in fulfilling Design Operations goals set forth by the Director of Design Operations:
      • Quality trends and actions taken/planned to address problems.
      • Motivation/collaboration trends and actions taken/planned to address problems.
    • Continuous Improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in corporate integration activities with other corporate functions as outlined by the CEO, VP Design Operations, and Director of Engineering.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Four-year degree or equivalent required. BS in Engineering, Project Management or Construction Management preferred.
  • Seven years with primary function as a design manager or project manager for design or design-build projects for high-tech manufacturing or “clean” facilities, scope including all typical facility design disciplines (CSA, MEP, etc.).
  • Experience should include a minimum of two such projects with at least $10MM in fee for Engineering and Architectural Design services.
  • Two years of site experience as DM responsible for engineering and design support in the field during construction. Experience must include examples of change management during construction, RFI’s, design revision management working with clients and contractors.
  • Four years of experience with managing at least five direct reports and proven examples of at least two direct reports growing into new roles.
