Position Responsibilities

The Accounting Manager will be responsible for accounting and reporting activities at the New York Genome Center. Reporting to the Director, Finance, s/he will manage the day-to-day accounting activities and supervise staff member(s). S/he will assist the SVP, Finance & Administration and Director, Finance with all not-for-profit accounting, including contributions and grants, functional expenses, net assets, financial reporting and 990 filings. This is a hands-on role that requires an individual who can perform activities themselves without significant delegation.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee accounting activities:
  • Review the monthly close processes including revenue reconciliation, customer deposits, unbilled AR, fixed asset additions and depreciation, prepaid amortization, interest expense accruals, new pledges, bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations and capital leases;
  • Review GL coding of all AP invoices to ensure proper accounting treatment;
  • Review all journal entries to ensure proper accounting treatment and proper support;
  • Review all aspects of the inventory process including goods received, usage, replacements, WIP, COS, and inventory counts; and,
  • Coordinate monthly meetings with departments to review revenue projects and margins, as well as WIP projects. Prepare or review necessary reports, record resulting entries.
  • Oversee monthly and quarterly reporting including reviewing or preparing the following reports:
  • Monthly budget to actual report;
  • Quarterly financial reporting to third parties; and,
  • Quarterly debt covenant calculation and reporting.
  • Perform SAP administration including:
  • Manage approval workflows;
  • Create and authorize users;
  • Manage Board uploads; and,
  • Run department BvA reports in Board.
  • Perform a variety of review and approvals, such as AMEX/Concur reports, journal entries, checks and wires.
  • Manage the 12-month trailing trial balance, sequencing margin/volume analysis, revenue variance analysis by grant and faculty lab BvA.
  • Further develop finance processes, such as the inventory management process, in collaboration with lab management staff, and the billing process.
  • Perform reconciliations with the Development department and prepare requested schedules.
  • Act as a resource for all not-for-profit accounting including, but not limited to:
  • Contributions;
  • Net assets;
  • Functional expenses;
  • Financial reporting specific items; and
  • Federal and state grants.
  • Assist in the preparation of year-end financial statements and footnotes, including supporting footnote schedules.
  • Assist in the year-end external audit, including preparation of audit schedules for the Finance Director's communications with the auditors.
  • Assist with other related duties including, but not limited to, ad hoc reporting and analysis.
  • Provide leadership and people management to a team of 1-3 accountants including mentoring, coaching, training and developing staff.

Required Skills

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting required;
  • CPA required;
  • 5 or more years of accounting experience required;
  • Not-for-profit experience, including A-133 audit experience, highly preferred;
  • Strong technical accounting experience including financial statement preparation and internal controls required;
  • Effective communication skills required; and,
  • A hands-on approach with the willingness to "roll up your sleeves" and do the work that is required.
