Overview

This position provides leadership of data-driven patient safety initiatives across the continuum of care. The Patient Safety Program Manager is responsible for working collaboratively with key leaders across the enterprise for the purpose of measurably improving patient safety and reducing patient harm/errors. This requires the systematic implementation of effective, reliable care practices and the development of an appropriate organizational and institutional patient safety culture which demands extreme collaboration with leaders of patient satisfaction and clinical quality. The Patient Safety Program Manager receives strategic direction from the Board Clinical Performance Committee and clinical enterprise governance structure, such as Clinical Leadership Group.

Responsibilities

Develop patient safety strategy

  • Lead and direct the development of a comprehensive Patient Safety Plan that includes long-term objectives and realistic business strategies.
  • Update the plan as needed and provides an annual assessment of plan completion.
  • Work closely with Risk Management, affiliate Patient Safety Officers, and UnityPoint Health Leadership, to conduct an annual assessment of patient risks and recommends system-wide patient safety goals.
  • Works closely with Human Resources and Marketing/ Communication leaders to ensure alignment of a culture of patient safety with system cultural work efforts and work streams.
  • Keep abreast of federal reporting regulations and guidelines related to patient safety.
  • Coordinate organizational response to regulatory standards related to patient safety including but not limited to TJC National Patient Safety Goals and DNV requirements.

Reduce the risk of patient harm

  • Develop and implement initiatives to create a patient safety culture using transparency as the foundation of this effort.
  • Support and encourage organizational patient safety learning by convening and leading a system-wide patient safety huddle.
  • Assure that affiliates have the tools and expertise necessary to conduct effective root cause and apparent cause analysis.
  • Partner with PIE colleagues to facilitate process improvement teams that directly support UnityPoint Health patient safety goals.
  • Inspire and promote a vision for patient safety that persuades, influences and motivates others.
  • Seek out experiences that may change perspective or provide an opportunity to learn new things.
  • Monitor literature and professional organizations for new or revised best practices related to patient safety including analytical techniques, tools and software.
  • Design, update, and implement patient safety education modules for new employee orientation and continuing education in collaboration with UPH Patient Safety Officers, Risk Managers, Human Resources, and Marketing / Communications.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve the patient safety program based on internal needs and external requirements and standards.
  • Leads the development and implementation of an organizational patient safety measurement strategy.
  • Support the development / maintenance of surveillance systems to identify and mitigate potential patient harm.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare related field.
  • Master’s Degreepreferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of healthcareexperience.
  • Basic understanding of care processes provided in multiple sites of care.
  • Prior healthcare leadership responsibility.
  • Knowledge of rapid cycle improvement theory and human factor principles.
  • Clinician background – Physician, RN, PT, RT, RRT preferred

  • Excellent verbal and writing skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills to provide effective consultation and collaboration.
  • Ability to relate to clinicians and support staff with diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to organize and define problems, develop strategies, and carry out action plans.
  • Analytical skills to interpret trends and analyze data.
  • Capable of exercising sound judgment and making independent decisions.
  • Ability to adapt to a complex organizational environment.

Certifications:

  • Certified Profession in Patient Safety (CPPS)
  • Just Culture Certification
  • Six SigmaBlack Belt, Lean or Adaptive Design certification
