UWMC Pharmacy has an outstanding opportunity for a FULL-TIME LEAD PHARMACIST - AMBULATORY (Day Shifts). Under the direction of the Pharmacy Manager, theLead Pharmacist - Ambulatory (Pharmacist 4) provides oversight of the ambulatory pharmacies.  The Lead helps direct pharmacists and others in daily operations of UWMC and Roosevelt Ambulatory Pharmacy locations; schedules pharmacist staff; collaborates on the training of new staff pharmacists, residents, and interns; and develops and implements procedures for ambulatory pharmacy services. 

Responsibilities include: 

Management: 

  • Direct the operation of the assigned area in the pharmacy department.       
  • Provide oversight for program development activities. Program development includes assessment of current practices, creating implementation plans, 
    directing implementation, monitoring specific metrics (including financial performance), and interfacing with multiple clinical departments as well as finance, compliance, and IT. 
  • Continuously monitor the workload of the Ambulatory Pharmacies and assign and reassign staff to proactively meet needs of patients. 
  • Provide direction of the work of pharmacy technicians, interns, students, residents, and pharmacists. 
  • Provide oversight for prioritization of daily activities. 
  • Provide oversight and decision-making responsibilities when the manager is unavailable. Work with staff and other departments if required to resolve identified patient care or service-related issues. 
  • Maintain effective communications with the other persons on the administrative staff of the Department of Pharmacy and other departments in the Hospital. 
  • Participate in quality improvement activities for the assigned program area. Coordinate the documentation and reporting of program activities for regulatory and accreditation agencies. 
  • Assist with the Controlled Substance Inventories and maintaining regulatory compliance. 
  • Detect, document, and report adverse drug reactions and medication errors. Assist in developing safe medication practices to prevent errors. 
  • Participate in Ambulatory Operations team meetings. 
  • Participate in development, implementation, and evaluation of departmental policies for the Ambulatory Operations team meetings. 
  • Collaborate with inpatient, clinic, and emergency department staff (Managers, Charge nurses, RN's, etc.) to ensure the service needs are supported and reviewed. 
  • Ensure compliance with all pharmacy laws and regulations. 
  • Participate in pharmacy and hospital committees as requested.


Personnel: 

  • Collaborate with Manager to ensure pharmacy staff development, new employee orientation, training, and competency assessment occurs in a timely manner. 
  • Schedule Pharmacist staff if required. 
  • Review and provide feedback on Patient Safety Net (PSN) reports. 
  • Provide input to manager with yearly evaluations for all ambulatory staff. 
  • Work with lead technician and manager to coordinate intern assignments, projects, and training.


Financial Responsibility: 

  • Organize and implement activities to improve and provide efficiencies for the staffing and workflow for ambulatory pharmacy services. 
  • Ensure that cash handling processes are being followed and appropriately monitored.


Education and Research: 

  • Provide drug information and/or periodic in-services to physicians, nurses, patients, and pharmacy staff. Coordinate scheduling to allow staff adequate time to perform such activities. 
  • Provide primary preceptorship of pharmacy residents and student pharmacists. 
  • Participate as Affiliate Faculty for the UW School of Pharmacy. 
  • Participate in collaborative research projects with healthcare professionals, pharmacy residents, and student pharmacists. 
  • In conjunction with UW School of Pharmacy guidelines, develop and update rotation curriculum for IPPE and APPE student programs for the ambulatory pharmacies. 
  • Serve as role model and mentor to staff on AIDET and UW Medicine Service Culture Guidelines.


Other duties: 

  • Perform the duties of a Pharmacist 3. 
  • Promote the image of service and goodwill to patients, the public, and medical center staff. 
  • Participate in professional pharmacy organizations. 
  • Model UW Medicine Professional image policy.

REQUIREMENTS:REQUIREMENTS: 
• State of Washington Pharmacist license. 
• Three years of experience in pharmacy practice. Months spent in the completion of an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists accredited residency training program may substitute month-for-month for the experience. 

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
