The Director of Clinical Services is responsible for modeling the 3 Company values of Compassion, Integrity, and Excellence, and for promoting the Hospice Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the Program, between the Program and other Company departments, and between the Program and all external stakeholders. The Director of Clinical Services directs and manages the interdisciplinary team in meeting the needs of the hospice patient and family in a manner consistent with the guidelines and policies of Hospice Compassus.  S/he communicates patient information to the business office and promotes a positive working relationship with the family, physician, and other agencies. May serve as Program’s Alternate Administrator, responsible for carrying out administrative and management functions and oversight in the absence of the Executive Director/Administrator. May carry caseload due to ebb and flow of patient census. S/he is responsible for applying the rules and regulations of state and federal regulatory agencies and other certified agencies.

  • Oversees Case Managers’ direction of patient care activities.
    • Conducts interdisciplinary team meetings.
    • Oversees the Case Manager’s development of the plan of care in accordance with hospice philosophy.
    • Supervises patient and family care as specified by the plan of care, assessing appropriateness, continuity, service, and quality of care.
    • Oversees the Case Manager’s consultation with the medical director regarding attending physician orders and patient needs, as related to the plan of care.
    • Oversees to ensure that patient’s recertifications are discussed and completed in a timely manner.
  • Manages all members of the IDT:  scheduling, productivity, mentoring and monitoring, 1x1’s, pay practices and timekeeping, and expense reports.
  • Communicates patient status information to the business office.
    • Oversees that Case Manager orders the correct equipment, supplies, and medications and that the program is billed appropriately.
    • Oversees the communication of patient information (admissions, deaths, respites, changes in level of care, etc.) via the Cerner system.
  • Promotes positive working relationship with family, physician, and other facilities.
    • Oversees the communication with the attending physician to ensure continuity and quality of care.
    • Oversees and ensures that Case Manager or discipline notifies all appropriate parties (IDT, physician, pharmacy, DME, etc.) of condition change or death.
    • Oversee the management of medication changes.
    • Oversees the arrangement of emergency transportation, as indicated.
    • Oversees the arrangement of inpatient respite or GIP stays for crisis intervention and/or symptom management.
    • Makes marketing visits and provides in-services to contract facilities, as appropriate.
  • May have RN Case Manager responsibilities.
    • Participates in on-call duty as needed or as back up to on-call nurse, performs patient admissions and visits as needed.
    • May carry caseload due to patient census ebb and flow.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function.

Directly supervises up to 30 colleagues. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training and terminating (with administrative approval) all interdisciplinary staff; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining colleagues; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Acts as Executive Director as needed to cover absences.  Ensures maximum utilization of resources. Promotes a positive and collaborative culture.

Education and/or Experience

Registered Nurse with minimum of three years in Healthcare required, preferably in SNF, Home Health or Hospice setting.  Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.  BSN a plus. Experience in insurance and Medicare/Medicaid billing and reimbursement preferred.

Specific state requirements:

  • Arizona - Must be a Registered Nurse with at least one year experience in health care administration
  • Connecticut – An agency supervisor of clinical services shall be a registered nurse with an active license to practice nursing in this state, and shall have one of the following: (1) A master's degree from a program approved by the National League for Nursing or the American Public Health Association with a minimum of one year full-time clinical experience in a home health agency or related community health program which included care of the sick at home; or (2) A baccalaureate degree in nursing and a minimum of three years of full-time clinical experience in nursing, at least one of which was in a home health agency or community health program which included care of the sick at home; or (3) A registered nurse who has been continuously employed in the position of supervisor of clinical services in a home health agency in this state since January 1, 1979; or (4) A diploma in nursing or an associates degree in nursing and (A) A minimum of three years of full-time or full-time equivalent clinical experience in nursing within the past five years, at least one year of which was in a home health care agency or community health program which included care of the sick at home; and (B) Evidence of certification by the American Nurses' Association as a community health nurse or completion of at least six credits received within two years in community health nursing theory or six credits in health care management from an accredited college or university program or school of nursing.
  • Louisiana - Must be a Registered Nurse with at least three years of experience. One of the three must be fulltime in hospice, home health care or oncology. There can be no concurrent employment.
  • Mississippi - Must be a Registered Nurse with at least three years of experience. One of the three must be fulltime in hospice, home health care or oncology. There can be no concurrent employment.
  • New Hampshire – RN, APRN or bachelor’s degree in a health field related to hospice care.
  • South Carolina - RN with a Bachelor’s degree or Associate Degree and three years experience in health care within the last five years.
  • Texas - Must be a licensed Registered Nurse in Texas and have one year experience as a Registered Nurse in the last 36 months.
  • Maine – RN with 1 year of experience and training in hospice care
  • Massachusetts - healthcare professional possessing academic training and experience in direct patient care and shall be qualified to coordinate the clinical services provided by the hospice

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, patients, colleagues, physicians and the general public. Must be able to read, write and speak English. Bilingual ability may be preferred or required.

Reasoning Ability 

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to think critically and perform continuous in-depth clinical/business process reviews.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully an individual should be proficiency in Microsoft Office software.

Other Qualifications

Understanding and acceptance of hospice philosophy.  Must be of high integrity including maintenance of confidential information including all personnel and patient records. Ability to work a flexible schedule, to include some evenings and weekends. Must be able to travel.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations

Must be a Registered Nurse licensed in the state of employment. Must have a valid driver’s license and auto liability insurance.
