SCOPE OF POSITION
The Nurse Manager, RN, MSN/MBA is a professional nurse who is responsible and accountable for the 24-hour operations of a designated clinical area to support patient/family focused, high performance/high commitment care. The successful manager achieves these goals by: defining and achieving standards for quality patient care; maintaining regulatory requirements; developing, managing, and evaluating area based work team performance. Participates in development and maintenance of policy and procedures and is accountable for compliance with all pertinent TJC Standards along with local, state, and federal regulations.
The Nurse Manager, RN, MSN/MBA, applies advanced knowledge of nursing and management systems in patient care, personnel development, fiscal and unit operations, performance improvement, and program development. This individual promotes innovation and excellence in clinical, service and team performance. Demonstrates the use of innovative ideas to increase productivity and reduce costs. Works to implement and evaluate systems that promote cost effective quality patient care. This position requires the use of critical thinking skills in the implementation of all phases of the nursing process.
The Nurse Manager, MSN/MBA demonstrates the acceleration of leadership skills and business acumen in positioning areas of responsibility for optimal performance in achieving the organization’s fiscal and quality objectives. Demonstrates an understanding of economic factors impacting health care resources including state, federal and third party payment structure. Management responsibility includes system, process, materials, fiscal, and human resources. Duties include comprehensive operational/fiscal day to day responsibility with emphasis on patient and team member satisfaction and retention. The Nurse Manager, MSN/MBA is responsible for identifying financial and quality metrics that demonstrate review of the current evidenced based literature, regulatory requirements, and organizational objectives.
Supports and promotes Shared Leadership structure and professional nursing team member involvement in activities at the unit level. Creates unit based teams to develop innovative practices to improve patient care at the unit level. Facilitates team member attendance and participation in hospital and system work group activities. In addition to facilitating activities at the unit level, the advanced practice Nurse Manager, MSN/MBA actively participates in and facilitates organizational improvement by leading and participating in committees and performance improvement teams across departments and disciplines within the facility and across the system as appropriate.
In the absence of an RN may be required to function in the role of staff RN to support patient care provision. Maintains RN licensure for state of practice, CPR certification, competency for the RN role and other certifications required to function as an RN in the area of practice. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously within the scope of professional standards, the rules, and regulations established by the appropriate state's Board of Nursing, and the policies and procedures of Mountain States Health Alliance. The nurse demonstrates skill in developing and guiding collaborative practice that delivers safe competent care based on meticulous application of the nursing process. The nurse demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of the diverse cultural backgrounds of patients and caregivers. The position involves maintaining current knowledge of evidence based nursing practice and the ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills in the implementation of all phases of the nursing process. The RN serves as a professional role model as a caregiver, mentor, teacher and resource for peers and other providers. The nurse demonstrates competency in the care of (circle all that apply): Neonate, Infant, Child, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric patient.
Facilitates continuing education of team members related to new technology and practice change by implementing findings from research and evidenced based literature. Promotes team member enrollment and attendance in continuing education activities within and external to the facility. The Nurse Manager, MSN/MBA continually seeks new information to improve the provision of health care to patients/families through evaluation of state of the science evidenced based practice literature and benchmarking with other health care institutions to improve the practices and development of protocols at MSHA for patient populations served. The Nurse Manager, MSN/MBA participates in professional organizations specific to patient population and/or leadership area to continually increase awareness of new standards of care, publication for patient populations, advocacy programs for patients, and legislative issues related to health care that could impact service provision.
Interview and hires nursing team members for area and implements strategies to retain and develop human resources. Supporting, counseling, and empowering area team members are key functions in ensuring consistent implementation of the appropriate patient care delivery model. Provides leadership and guidance to assure that team members practice within established MSHA standards. Demonstrates knowledge of scope of role responsibility and licensure for all team members in area of responsibility. Evaluates and facilitates team member staffing resources to provide optimum patient care based on patient’s needs and acuity. The Nurse Manager, RN, MSN/MBA supports and promotes the policies and philosophies of Mountain States Health Alliance in all daily activities. As part of the well-coordinated team, the Nurse Manager, RN, MSN/MBA collaborates with the medical staff, administration, and other support departments to achieve patient and family-centered care. Manages the daily operations of the nursing units including team member management, environmental monitoring, performance improvement, risk management, follow up on patient complaints and compliments, and helps assure that short-term problems are satisfactorily handled. Maintains positive customer relations as well as ensures the areas supervised provide excellent customer service.

It is vital that an individual in this position be capable of good communication skills. It is of the utmost importance that written communication is legible.
MSHA expects all team members to support the VOS initiative by demonstrating awareness of the VOS system and effectively applying it to his/her work.
Job duties of this position may require access to protected patient information (PHI). The team member will be accountable for appropriate use of the record and compliance with all confidentiality and security policy and procedures related to use, access, and disclosure of PHI.
RN can verbalize that the RN is responsible for all of the LPN’s patients and therefore must ensure reporting from the LPN happens in a timely, appropriate and complete manner.
