Looking for a highly motivated engineer/scientist to lead process and product development activities at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. Prior experience working with HE (high explosive) and energetic materials is highly desirable. This position will be focused on propellant formulation and manufacture, including but not limited to, manufacture of extruded single base, double base solvent propellants as well as double base (EDB) solventless propellants. Experience designing and installing equipment and processes is also a plus.
Interested candidates should exhibit sound judgment, initiative and self-motivation, and be able to complete tasks with minimal supervision. Solid communication, teamwork and integration skills will be required to work effectively across functions at multiple levels. The ability to manage time effectively while dealing with a variety of issues in a dynamic environment will be key to the success of this individual.
The successful candidate will under his/her own initiative devise and refine safe, effective, and efficient methods of manufacturing energetic formulations; undertake experiments using corrosive, explosive, and toxic materials in a safe manner; specify lab and pilot equipment in support of development experiments and lab, pilot, and full scale process development; provide chemical support to BAE production departments; and maintain adequate records of work and present in a form suitable for management and legal reporting. Technical writing and presentation skills are required.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree and 8 years work experience or equivalent experience
Required Skills and Education:
Required education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or science field
At least 8 years of engineering experience in process installation and improvement, product research and development and/or manufacturing.
Ability to render P&I diagrams, process flow diagrams, building and equipment layouts, etc
Understanding of Process Safety Management (PSM)
Preferred Skills and Education:
Prefer greater than 12 years of relevant experience in engineering supporting energetic operations.
Experience in propellant/energetics formulating, pressing, manufacturing and/or ballistic results.
Established defense industry knowledge and network.
Experience with interpreting and adhering to government military specifications.
Strong communication, presentation and technical writing skills needed.
Strong project management skills and experience.
Knowledge of Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and application.
Ability to work well in team environment.
Must be willing to travel domestically and internationally (<20%).
Strong customer focus skills.
