Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Serves in a leadership capacity to work with and influence senior leadership throughout the health ministry – hospital, clinic, shared services and ministry leadership – in facilitating the understanding and application of the Mercy mission, values, charism and Catholic Identity into local and ministry-wide organizational decisions, practices and activities.
  • Participates in key ministry-wide initiatives (such as Mercy’s Consumer-Centric Operating Model or Brand-Driven Growth) to ensure decisions and implementation of activities are consistent with our Christian/Catholic/Mercy identity. Provides guidance, consultation and assistance to leaders in understanding and fulfilling their responsibilities in mission integration into each initiative.
  • Participates as member of senior leadership for key centralized/shared services to help conceptualize, develop and implement key strategies that are consistent with our Christian/Catholic/Mercy identity. Provides guidance, consultation and assistance to leaders in understanding and fulfilling their responsibility for mission integration into their area of service.
  • Participates as member of local hospital, clinic or regional leadership in facilitating the understanding and application of our Christian/Catholic/Mercy identity into local or regional organizational decisions, practices and activities by working in substantive and measureable ways with:
  • Clinicians and caregivers to help shape why and how patients experience caregiving
  • Department and clinic leaders to help shape why and how co-workers experience the worklife through the assessing, hiring, training, engaging and evaluation processes
  • Community leaders and organizations in furthering Mercy’s partnering role in improving community health
  • Business strategies and partnerships through cultural assessments and involvement with negotiations and leader meetings to help shape why and how we partner and make business decisions




  • Executive acumen, strong interpersonal skills, and able to effectively use one’s personal talents to influence leader attitudes, decisions and behaviors, and to help shape organizational practices and culture in light of our Christian/Catholic/Mercy identity
  • Personally characterized by being other-oriented, having a “servant’s heart,” possessing strong self-confidence but low ego, and committed to an attitude of being a “missionary working with people in a foreign land”
  • Organizational change acumen and a commitment to the understanding that the most effective mission leadership is when others are grounding and shaping decisions and practices in our Christian/Catholic/Mercy identity rather than being the primary change agent oneself; finds ultimate satisfaction in the organization changing rather than being the one who does the changing
  • Provides and oversees formation experiences in meaningful and measurable ways and in a variety of formats with board members, executives, leaders, integrated and aligned physicians, and co-workers in all Mercy sites of care to help them identify their work as ministry and integrate the Mercy mission, values and charism into their decisions and day-to-day work
  • Leads and facilitates formation experiences with:
  • Leaders through Advanced, Executive and Personal Formation
  • Governance through board formation
  • Co-Workers through co-worker formation programs, clinic formation, and stopping for overhead prayer
  • Physicians through physician formation programs and clinic formation
  • Trains and oversees leaders and co-workers to facilitate co-worker formation sessions and clinic formation, and administrators in rural facilities to lead board formation sessions
  • Collaborates under the leadership of Mercy’s Director of Formation to participate in specific committees and delegated responsibilities toward developing and continually refining:
  • Mercy’s formation strategic plan
  • Formation modules and experiences
  • Efforts to integrate formation into all Mercy training and development programs and ministry-wide leadership meetings
  • Methodologies for “hardwiring” formation practices as regular and “value-added” practices
  • Metrics of success or effectiveness for Mercy formation programs and experiences
  • Efforts to share local formation programs and experiences with all other mission leaders ministry-wide



  • Well-formed in the Christian/Catholic/Mercy heritage and tradition
  • Effective in helping colleagues identify their work as ministry
  • Able to explain and integrate Scripture and the basic moral and social principles and doctrines of Catholic theology as articulated by Vatican II and subsequent Church teaching
  • Capable of connecting faith with life using various formation processes of sentiment, knowledge and behavior
  • Competently and meaningfully able to communicate Catholic theology as relevant to the organization’s vision, strategies and operations


Provides operational oversight to critical mission-specific responsibilities:

  1. Ethics: In a matrixed collaboration with the Senior Vice President for Mission & Ethics, provides consultation to the local or regional Director of Ethics to help assure that clinical ethics issues are proactively identified and effectively addressed, and works with local leadership on organizational ethics issues
  2. Pastoral Care: In a matrixed collaboration with Mercy’s Director of Pastoral Care, provides consultation supporting the work of the local Manager of Pastoral Care in effectively implanting the overall provision of pastoral care services
  3. Community Health: In a matrixed collaboration with Mercy’s Executive Director of Community Health, provides consultation supporting the local or regional Director of Community Health in complying with IRS regulations, facilitating organizational efforts to connect community health initiatives to organizational strategies, involving local leadership in the community, and expending sponsorship dollars to meet identified community health needs
  4. Hire for Mercy Fit: Interviews and assesses candidates for leadership or physician positions for their Mercy Fit
  5. In some smaller facilities, other non-mission critical areas of responsibility may need to be assumed by the mission leader; given the full responsibilities of this role and the scope of the Mercy health ministry, however, such assignments should be rare and short-termed



  1. Advanced skills in group communication and group and team processes, including skills of facilitation, negotiation and conflict resolution
  2. Excellent skills in both verbal and written communication
  3. Able to make executive decisions based on the Mercy mission, values and charism along with business and financial realities
  4. Able to function effectively in matrix reporting relationships


 Serves, when necessary, as a “prophetic voice” or “conscience of the organization:”

  1. Articulates and makes operational our Christian/Catholic/Mercy identity as a credible driving force or as a significant influencer at key decision points within the ministry
  2. Acts with practical knowledge, courage and prudence in applying the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services and Catholic Social Teaching to operational issues of management, finance, human resources and collaborations as well as to particular clinical issues
  3. Initiates, generates and promotes contact with other Catholic healthcare providers within and outside Mercy for networking and collaborating in mission and ethics endeavors



  1. Demonstrated passion for our Christian/Catholic/Mercy identity, and the ability to inspire others to live out or apply our identity in operational, clinical and worklife settings
  2. Clearly sees how our Christian/Catholic/Mercy identity is integrated within the local organization or throughout the ministry, and has a vision of where it needs to go or how it needs to be applied
  3. Self-confidence to interpret our Christian/Catholic/Mercy identity prophetically and appropriately for varied audiences, both internally and external



  Assures an environment of prayer and serves as a liaison with the local Catholic Church and Sisters of Mercy

  1. Develops and leads meaningful rituals, services and celebrations that focus on our Mercy mission, values and charism and our Catholic identity, and which serve as an essential part of our Mercy life and culture
  2. Assures sacramental coverage as a critical component of pastoral care
  3. Maintains strong relations with the local Sisters of Mercy, and assures thorough and ongoing communication between the Sisters and the local health ministry leadership
  4. In collaboration with the Senior Vice President for Mission and Ethics and the Mission Vice President responsible for Church Relations, contributes to communication with the local bishop, addresses any areas of interest or concern relating to the ERDs, Catholic moral theology or Canon Law, oversees the local ministry’s involvement in diocesan ministries, advocacy efforts and fundraising events, and proactively builds positive relation with diocesan leaders and parishes



Able to articulate one’s lived faith experience and the meaning it brings to their lives as well as lead rituals and services to empower individuals and organizations to do the same

  1. Understands and values the significance of sacrament and ritual;
  2. Able to articulate the meaning of ministry and to relate the healthcare ministry to the broader ministry of the Church
  3. Understands and can apply the ERDs, Catholic moral theology and pertinent aspects of Canon Law

  • Masters degree in theology with a specialization in mission services, or a commitment to work toward this degree, is required. Masters degree in theology or ethics is acceptable.
  • Five years healthcareexperience; senior management leadership preferred.
  • Experience within a corporate structure
