Purpose of Job:

The Senior Manager, Communications, is responsible for managing the development, implementation and coordination of all ScotiaMcLeod communications strategies and tactical plans to maintain and enhance ScotiaMcLeod’s strategic communication efforts.

 

Major Accountabilities:

  • Manage all editorial aspects and coordination in the development and production of all ScotiaMcLeod communications by:
    • Managing the end-to-end strategy and process for all communications at ScotiaMcLeod, by working with internal business partners, Communications, and Senior Management team of ScotiaMcLeod to develop, write, edit and effectively distribute communications that support the firm’s strategic initiatives and long-term vision
    • Managing / writing / editing all communications and materials including newsletters, otherinternal and external business presentations, email messages, and general updates and announcements at multiple intervals throughout the year based upon ScotiaMcLeod needs and input gathered from business unit heads, support unit heads and other stakeholders
    • Managing / writing / editing executive presentations for the Senior Management of ScotiaMcLeod as required
    • Developing content and providing editorial expertise on new internal communication and media channels
    • Writing and editing project-based communications in collaboration with stakeholders and Senior Management team
    • Managing firm-wide distribution lists  
    • Sourcing, writing, editing and distributing news through the SM Weekly Update
    • Editing and approving Operational FYIs to ensure clarity and accuracy in messages
  • Plan and executeinternal and external communication and marketing programs, inpartnershipwith Business Partners by:
    • Building and maintaining productive working relationships with multiple stakeholders
    • Identifying and managing communications needs to support ScotiaMcLeod by working closely with Business Partners and other groups
    • Providing advice and direction to stakeholders on communication strategies where required
    • Provide communications support to business partners and Senior Management team by interpreting complex messages and creating targeted communications for various layers of the organization
    • Coordinating the delivery of communications to all target audiences (internal and external)
    • Establishing communication objectives for assigned programs and projects by contributing to concepts, ideas and programs as required
    • Representing the business on various working teams and at periodic cross-functional status meetings
  • Support the ScotiaMcLeodstrategic initiatives through effective communications by:
    • Working closely with ScotiaMcLeod business partners to develop high-quality communications that support the strategic direction of the business and effectively promote and motivate head office staff, partners, branch management teams and advisors
    • Researching, writing and developing presentations, newsletter content, advisor resources and client-facing communications
    • Developing and maintaining relationships with senior executives and directors to ensure open communications and flow of information to support strategic communications
    • Delivering quarterly GWM communications requirements to support ScotiaMcLeod exposure in executive collaboration memos, newsletters and executive presentations
    • Maintain and oversee ScotiaMcLeod key strategic messaging across all communications channels, including external (in partnership with the broader Wealth Management Communications team) 
    • Representing ScotiaMcLeod by understanding the business line objectives, strategies, products and solutions
  • Manage all the intranet content by:
    • Managing content and partnering with the WealthNet team to ensure consistent messaging and appropriate dissemination of information to branch staff through intranet
    • Developing editorial content for the Featured Content section of WealthNet and LaunchPad to promote awareness of key strategic initiatives, product launches or other high-profile news items 
    • Ensuring the WealthNet team and ScotiaMcLeod Business Partners co-ordinate on any required updates to the intranet
    • Reviewing WealthNet to identify ways to improve/streamline the user experience
    • Developing new materials/content for WealthNet
  • Contribute to the effective functioning of theSales Management andWealth ManagementCommunication teams by:
    • Maintaining a high level of full-service brokerage industry knowledge
    • Building effective working relationships across the team and with various business line and corporate function contacts
    • Implementing communications best practices to ensure consistent and effective message delivery
    • Maintaining a high level of customer service
    • Facilitating a culture of open and honest communication
    • Actively participating and contributing to touchbases and team meetings
    • Encouraging the generation of new ideas and approaches
    • Actively sharing knowledge and experience to enhance the development of all team members

 

Education/Work Experience/Designations:

Education:

  • Post-graduate degree in Communications, Journalism or equivalent experience

Practical Experience:

  • 5 - 7 years of experience in corporate communications or related industry communications experience
  • Extensive knowledge of the financial services industry, particularly wealth management
  • Demonstrated expertise in planning and implementing strategic internal communication programs including seeking, creating and championing creative communication solutions
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Extensive knowledge in developing publications in all media, particularly PowerPoint and online media
  • Excellent project management skills with a high-level of accountability for the quality and timely completion of projects

Individual:

  • Thorough knowledge of the financial services marketplace with a detailed understanding of the full-service brokerage and Scotiabank’s competitive positioning within those markets.
  • Ability to work with senior levels of management
  • Self-driven, results-oriented and an ability to work under pressure
  • Excellent knowledge of business-related computer software such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc
