Purpose of the role
The role is responsible for monthly financial reporting, quarterly financial reporting, and ad-hoc reporting on results of the business (Internal and external reporting, external audit, and support finance projects). The position will also research and update the consolidated corporate accounting policies to ensure they continue to be in compliance with IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards). The role is also responsible for implementation and the documentation of processes and related controls. 

For optimum success in this role, taking initiative, building collaborative relationships, being flexible and adaptable, will be important. 

You will be accountable for

  • Performing accounting policy analysis and research including:
  • Updating policies to be compliant with new accounting pronouncements 
  • Public accounting experience or other competitive environment within North America preferred
  • Staying current with changes in IFRS and updating accounting policies to ensure that the policies continue to be in accordance with IFRS 
  • Reviewing the accounting treatment and impacts of new products and transactions
  • Providing accounting policy guidance to users throughout the organization  
  • Supporting the quarterly financial reporting process including:
  • Preparing the quarterly MD&A and IFRS financial statements
  • Preparing the quarterly Board presentation 
  • Supporting the monthly financial reporting process including:
  • Creating financial reports using Management Reporter and other reporting software  
  • Reviewing monthly financials for completeness and accuracy 
  • Preparing monthly financial statements in accordance with IFRS (consolidated balance sheet, income statement, statement of changes in equity and cash flow statement) ;
  • Liaising with other areas of Moneris as assigned to ensure all financial information is reported appropriately
  • Preparing the annual consolidated IFRS financial statements and related note disclosures 
  • Coordinating the annual external financial statement audit and pension audit by compiling and preparing the audit deliverables through liaising with various departments 
  • Documenting and updating all key processes and controls across the organization that impacts financial accounting 
  • Supporting the external valuation firm to complete the company valuation (semi-annual process) including preparing and compiling schedules and reports to support the valuation
  • Supporting mergers & acquisition transactions by performing the financial due diligence, competitor analysis, market research and creating pro forma financial statements 
  • Supporting strategic and other ad hoc projects as required

 Your experience includes

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business or Accounting is required
  • Canadian Accounting Designation required (CPA)
  • Equivalent work experience may be considered a substitution
  • 5-7 years of relevant work experience in a financial accounting environment
  • Public accounting experience within North America preferred.
  • IFRS experience is mandatory
  • Experience writing accounting policies is preferred
  • Previous experience in the payment industry considered an asset
  • Proficient with Microsoft Windows/ MS Office Applications 
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics AX and Management Reporter is preferred
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills – experience manipulating and arranging large data sets using Pivot tables, Vlookup, and formulas 
  • Ability to identify issues and apply accounting policies  
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) with proven ability to communicate technical and highly complex information
  • Strong business acumen and analytical skills including ability to conduct quantitative analysis
  • Possess the ability to constructively confront people and issues
  • Attention to detail while being able to step back to consider the impacts on the consolidated entity
  • Aptitude to work with large amounts of data and to manipulate, arrange and manage it effectively
  • Ability to recognize issues and take initiative to work on finding an effective solution
  • Ability to apply critical thinking to business issues and drive results
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting
