The Executive Director of Patient Safety reports to the AVP of Safety and Regulatory Compliance. As a member of the health system’s corporate leadership team, responsible for thestrategy, operational structure of Patient Safety, serves as the Patient Safety Organization (PSO) and constructs policies needed to build and sustain a culture of safety and high reliability. He/she directs the HPI Safety First Program, has oversight of the Hospital Improvement Innovation Network (HIIN). Responsible for the oversight of the event management system, coordination of the Code E calls, education of RCAs, ACA’s, and near misses. Responsible for integrating these programs into the broader mission and operations of the health system. This includes responsibility for developing and maintaining an aggressive education and marketing plan for safety and high reliability science and practice. The Executive Director consolidates, recommends final approval, and administers overall business plan and budget for safety under the direction of theAVP. Serves as a spokesperson, and is generally recognized as the strategy Patient Safety owner and subject matter expert. Drives results through effective hiring practices, sound managementphilosophy, team development, and measurement/management of key performance indicators. Relates to and influences the policies and practices of internal and external partners tomaximize the value of WellStar’s high reliability program. Maintains strong positive relationships with team members, medical staff, senior leaders, and patients. Seeks input from key physician leaders, system leaders, community partners and customers to insure cutting-edge services.
Required Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s degree preferred. Healthcare or clinical degree preferred.
Required Minimum Licensure/Certification: Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) and Patient Safety (CPPS) required within first year of employment. RN preferred for clinical knowledge.
Required Minimum Experience: Ten (10) years’ experience in healthcare including five (5) years in a quality setting required. Eight to ten (8 - 10) years management experience required. Two (2) years in program development required.
Required Minimum Skills: Knowledge of safety science, analysis (both common cause and root cause analysis), safety metrics, patient Safety Organization and culture change. Ability to develop collaborative relationships and effectively execute project management plans. Excellent communication/presentation skills, flexibility, ability to multi-task, organization skills to support a multi-component system; travelbetween sites.
