Job Summary

The Commercial Buildings group at NREL has new engineering positions available. This position will be responsible for research level energy analysis for buildings and districts. Work will use building energy analysis software tools, EnergyPlus and OpenStudio to generate predicted building and district load profiles.

In addition to use of building energy analysis software tools, efforts will also comprise of computer programming in order to evaluate impacts of parameter variation. Work will respond to the needs of the Task Leader on this effort. The position will also provide an opportunity for publishing case studies and summaries of the information generated by the simulations and other analyses. Center management reserves the right to modify assignments as needed according to organizational priorities in a dynamic environment. 

Duties

Experience with the design and delivery process for zero energy commercial buildings especially for the office, retail, mixed use, and/or schools sectors. Experience in designing, evaluating, and modeling advanced HVAC preferred.  Experience with building energy analysis software tools, EnergyPlus and OpenStudio. Understanding of basic heat transfer, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics. Understanding of electricaldistribution systems and power electronics. Experience in designing and installing acquisition systems and evaluating collected data using a variety of techniques. Experience in experiment design, uncertainty analysis and statistics.

Requirements

This position requires a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Building Science, Architectural Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field of study.  Demonstrated experience in thermal-system simulation and modeling is required. Proficiency with programming languages, Python, Matlab, C++, Ruby, and Engineering Equation Solver (EES) is preferred. Proficiency with building energy modeling tools such as OpenStudio, EnergyPlus and Modelica is also preferred.

The successful candidate will have a track record of research and publications in thermal-system modeling, experimental design and operation, and building energy science.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills

Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
