Manages and oversees the management of the legal medical record, release of information and birth registry activities for Cottage Health, ensuring compliance with all applicable internal and external legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements for medical records. Provides daily oversight and management to CH' HIM staff that complete record management activities (processing, prepping, scanning, indexing), birth registry and release of information functions. Assists CH healthcare providers with access and use of the electronic legal medical record.
Oversees HIM supervisors and staff to ensure compliance with internal and external medical record requirements, adequate staffing, and equitable scheduling and timely completion of duties.
Manages, monitors and oversees daily activities of the HIM operations support staff to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal productivity and quality standards related to HIM operations, including but not limited to record management, chart completion, privacy and birth registry functions.
Participates in the development of job descriptions, performance standards and policies and procedures related to health information management. Monitors staff compliance with standards of performance and provides feedback to staff on a routine basis.
Designs training programs for the HIM operations support staff and provides management oversight to ensure effective implementation that will facilitate the development of job skills and knowledge that will help staff exceed productivity and quality standards.
Assists with the development, implementation and monitoring of the HIM Department Performance Improvement Program. Works with the Shared Governance participants, HIM Director or other members of the CH Management/Administrative team to identify performance improvement opportunities, develop and implement corrective action plans and monitor/report effectiveness of improvement initiatives.
Serves as a laison with the physicians and Medical Staff Services to ensure accurate and timely completion of medical records.
Identifies and appropriately resolves conflicts, handling difficult and sensitive situations tactfully and responsibly.
Demonstrates flexibility on shifting priorities as needed and performs other related duties as assigned.
LEVEL OF EDUCATION:
Associates Degree in Heath Information Management, with preference to a Bachelor's in a related healthcare discipline.
RHIT or RHIA
Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to maintenance of health records and confidentiality of patient information in an acute care setting.
Demonstrated ability to manage and use interpersonal skills effectively to build and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, administrators, physicians, nursing, co-workers, and otherhealthcare personnel
Proficient in computer applications including Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
Preferred: Knowledge of HIM system applications for electronic medical records, chart management and transcription functions.
YEARS OF RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE
Five years in an acute care HIM setting with at least two years supervisory experience. Preference to One year management experience in an acute care HIM setting.
