Job Description:

Budget Title: Associate Vice President (MP-2, Management Confidential)*

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience

Information Technology touches almost every aspect of Binghamton University's work and community. As the university continues to grow and implement its Road Map, transformational leadership of the Information Technology function will be critical to its success.

The incoming CIO will lead, inspire, develop, and manage a talented and engaged professional team with a wide range of responsibilities, knowledge and experience. This leader will empower staff to meet the high expectations of the campus community by supporting and mentoring them in their work, establishing clear priorities and measurable goals, communicating effectively and leading transparently. They will establish a culture for ITS to be a highly responsive, reliable and service oriented function. Through the use of a customer relationship model and continuous improvement process, the CIO will assure the highest possible service levels within information technology are met.

The CIO will report to the Vice President for Operations and will be the university's principal technology leader responsible for academic, research, administrative, security, and infrastructure technology resources and services. The CIO works closely with the Provost, all the Vice Presidents, Deans of each of the University's colleges and schools, Dean of the Libraries, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, and the Assistant Provost and Executive Director of the Center for Learning and Teaching. They will also work with faculty, students, Faculty Senate, Professional Staff Senate, department heads and other campus users to assess current needs and formulate plans and projects for ITS' support of their needs.

The successful candidate will be an individual experienced with the rhythms of teaching and research at the university level, who can foster innovation and excellence and provide vision, leadership, direction and planning for the academic and research technology path for Binghamton.

Other responsibilities of the CIO include:

  • Building upon the IT Strategic Plan, continually evaluate the ITS organization; assessing structure, staff and technology and make recommendations to meet and exceed stakeholder requirements
  • Support IT governance; ensure organization is equipped to proactively address stakeholders' future needs and opportunities to better utilize technology. Create an environment where innovation is rewarded
  • Support and enable uninterruptible mission-critical information technology services while enabling effective teaching and cutting-edge research
  • Oversee and manage budget and ITS organization to assure resources are utilized in the most effective and efficient manner possible. Participate in appropriate university policy formulation and procedure development
  • Collaborate with the State University of New York (SUNY) IT organization and other SUNY IT leadership to take advantage of available resources and leverage best practices across the SUNY system

The incoming CIO at Binghamton University will be a self-confident leader with a collaborative, open management style that fosters participation and contribution by others. They will have both broad and deep information technology experience, encompassing strategic planning, complex organizational structures, projectplanning, budgeting and management, process development and transformation. The CIO will be a dynamic leader who combines a service orientation with an energy and enthusiasm towards innovation. Other desired qualifications and characteristics include:

  • A demonstrated interest in and knowledge of leading edge information technology within a comparable higher education or other large-scale organization
  • An appreciation of technology's potential to facilitate teaching and learning. A grounded understanding of IT principals with a passion for excellence and pushing the boundaries of traditional thinking; ability to forecast new technology development and future opportunities
  • Experience implementing and overseeing management of enterprise-level academic, research and administrative systems
  • The ability to explain information technology to non-technical audiences; ability toarticulate the transformative potential of technology to non-technical stakeholders
  • A collaborative leadership style; Proven interpersonal skills with the ability toestablish and build credibility with a broad group of constituents including faculty, administration, staff and stakeholders campus wide
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully managing teams of similar size, skill and diversity. Strength in recruiting and retaining talent within the ITS organization
  • Strong financial acumen with experience managing a budget
  • Commitment to the highest level of integrity and ethics
  • bachelor's degree, preferable in Information Systems, Computer Science or related field is requiredAdvanced degree preferred
