This posting is for an Optical Polymers Scientist in the Advanced Materials Technology Division of Eastman Chemical Company located in Kingsport, TN. The position will have responsibility for applications research and development supporting the Electronic Films Visualize Materials business. The successful applicant will be expected to translate a variety of polymer chemistries, physical properties, and processing techniques to optical compensationfilm needs. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively and function in an innovative, fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.

The selected individual for this position will be required to:

  • Identify OLED and LCD display film needs and opportunities through discussion with customers, sales, technical and marketing personnel
  • Understand and contribute to complex displays market maps paired with customer film functionality requirements
  • Translate market needs and industry trends into multigenerational plans for optical polymer research
  • Develop technologylandscapes of compensationfilm intellectual property
  • Work with subject matter experts in marketing, organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and optical physics to correlate polymer properties to fitness-for-use requirements
  • Be well versed in optical polymer coating, casting, stretching and transfer dynamics and related intellectual property landscapes
  • Determine fitness-for-use criteria for specific applications through a combination of empirical, experimental, and modeling methods
  • Understand and leverage polymer structure-process-property relationships pertaining to optical properties
  • Create laboratory scale film prototypes by reducing fitness-for-use criteria to fundamental material characteristics and polymer structure using knowledge of structure-processing-property relationships
  • Lead multidisciplinary new product development project teams     


The desired candidate should possess the following qualifications:


  • Education:  Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science or closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Fundamental polymer chemistry understanding and polymer processing knowledge
  • General application research and development experience preferably in areas related to OLED and LCD display films such as polarizer films, compensationfilms, diffusers, protection films
  • Interest in learning modeling capabilities for predicting the optical properties of multilayer structures
  • Ability to understand industrial processes to manufacture displays (films, laminated sub-systems, and final display panel)
  • Knowledge of optical film measurement (birefringence, retardation, defects, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Broad interests and willingness to take on relatively undefined challenges
  • Previous industrial product development experience is preferred but not required
